Kenji Fukuzawa, Professor
0 student voices
The Fukuzawa Lab studies sensing engineering, which creates new technologies through "measuring." The lab develops technologies for measuring with high precision, measuring with ultra-small sensors, and measuring intelligently. It also incorporates advances in information science such as machine learning and AI, and conducts joint research with labs in the Graduate School of Informatics. Its applications are wide-ranging, including precision machines such as hard disks, automobile engines, artificial joints, DNA analysis chips, and micromachines.

Takayuki Hoshino, Professor

The Hoshino-Maruyama Lab aims to understand the functions of living organisms through engineering technologies that control shape. The lab studies how to rebuild and extend biological systems by applying, in an engineering way, physical phenomena shared by the autonomous movement and computation mechanisms of living organisms. Based on the science of nano- and microstructures and on biological information processing, the lab investigates how biological functions are formed. It applies the results to tissue regeneration engineering and to the development of interfaces that connect with living bodies.

The Fluid Dynamics Lab studies fluid dynamics for realizing next-generation aircraft, from environmentally friendly aircraft to aircraft for planetary exploration. By measuring, modeling, and controlling flow phenomena involved in flight, the lab aims to improve aircraft and other transport vehicles. Its work includes measurement that reconstructs flow fields from multiple measurements using machine learning, flow visualization using functional molecules, and research using computer simulation and special wind tunnels.

The Shock Wave and Space Propulsion Lab studies new technologies for flying and propulsion in the aerospace field. The lab aims to deeply understand complex, advanced flows such as shock waves, plasma and high-temperature flows, and cryogenic flows, and to generate new ideas. The lab develops plasma thrusters that use liquid hydrogen, a propellant used in rockets, and studies how cooling walls to cryogenic temperatures in supersonic flow suppresses flow separation.

The Structural Mechanics Lab studies the strength and failure of advanced materials used in aerospace, such as carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) and nanocomposites. The lab investigates how to evaluate and improve materials' strength, fracture, and fatigue properties, and aims to create new aerospace structures using them. In addition to experiments such as strength tests, the lab develops evaluation methods using lasers and ultrasound, and works on numerical simulation.

Eiji Shamoto, Professor
0 student voices
The Production Engineering Lab (Shamoto Lab) conducts research that creates ultra-precision technologies, based on new principles and ideas, to support next-generation manufacturing. Built on two pillars, ultra-precision machining and production systems, the lab covers not only machining but also machine vibration and control, deformation and fracture of materials, and the use of fluids and heat. Alongside their research, students also take part in hands-on training such as building AD converters, controlling servo motors, and measuring and analyzing machine vibration. Individual lab visits are accepted at any time.

Akinori Yoshimura, Professor

The Advanced Composite Materials Lab studies advanced composite materials, centered on carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). Through both experiments and analysis, the lab investigates the design of CFRP structures and the mechanisms by which the material is damaged and fails. The goal is to make composites usable in aerospace and automotive structures. The lab conducts its research in close collaboration with the National Composite Center (NCC), the university's industry-academia collaboration hub.

The Aerospace Vehicle Motion Systems Engineering Lab studies ultra-small aircraft, as well as microsatellites and space systems. Aiming to propose flying vehicles with new concepts, such as drones, the lab also studies how birds, insects, and other creatures fly in nature. In space, the lab explores ways to turn the effects of magnetic fields and space plasma, which act more strongly on smaller satellites, to advantage in controlling satellites. To verify its research in space, the lab designs and develops microsatellites itself.

Susumu Hara, Professor

The Control Systems Engineering Lab studies control problems for spacecraft, aircraft, and similar vehicles. It works on attitude control and landing motion of lunar and planetary probes, and on orbit and attitude control of spacecraft and aircraft. The lab extends these results to ground vehicles such as motorcycles and transport robots. It also studies control theory, the foundation of these problems.

Ryuta Sato, Project Professor

The Okuma Machine Tool Engineering Endowed Lab studies how to advance machine tools, the “mother machines” that make machines such as aerospace vehicles. The research is carried out jointly with engineers from companies. The lab builds machine tools based on new machining principles, aiming to cut production costs and environmental impact through higher speed and efficiency, and to improve quality and performance through higher precision. It shares its website and building with the Production Engineering Research Group (Shamoto Lab).
