Naoki Hayakawa, Professor
1 student voices
The Hayakawa Lab studies a wide range of topics in power engineering, including high-electric-field phenomena, electrical insulation, and superconducting technology. Its main subjects are discharge and insulation in solids, liquids, gases, and vacuum, and the application of superconductivity to electric power. Experiments are carried out in a high-voltage laboratory equipped with an 800 kV impulse voltage source and a 250 kV AC voltage source. The lab also collaborates with industry, including participation in research and development projects and joint research.
Takeyoshi Kato, Professor
1 student voices
The Kato Lab studies flexible power and energy systems that can accommodate large amounts of renewable energy. Achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 requires a range of efforts, including integrating large amounts of generation from sources such as solar and wind power. The lab works on forecasting power generation using weather forecasts and satellite images, methods for planning and operating power systems, and control of equipment in homes and businesses.
Masayoshi Yamamoto, Professor
1 student voices
The Yamamoto Lab studies power electronics, the technology of power conversion that changes the form of electricity. The lab aims to make the power converters and motors used in hybrid vehicles, electric vehicles, power infrastructure, and next-generation aircraft more efficient, smaller, and lighter. The lab's research integrates the fields of power semiconductors, control, and magnetics. Using next-generation power semiconductors such as GaN and SiC, the lab builds actual power converters.
Yutaka Yoshida, Professor
1 student voices
The Yoshida Lab studies materials for using superconductivity, in which electrical resistance drops to zero, in power equipment. The lab makes high-temperature superconducting tape wires and high-quality thin films with nanoscale structures controlled. To make good thin films efficiently, the lab uses simulation and machine learning in addition to experiments. The lab aims to make superconductivity something that “anyone, anywhere, anytime” can use in the electrified society of the future.

The Space Electromagnetic Observation Lab uses the latest radio and optical technologies to study variations in the space around Earth and the upper atmosphere through observation. Its main targets are auroras, nightglow, and the ionosphere and magnetosphere. The lab measures the motion of plasma in the space around Earth with a large HF radar in Rikubetsu, Hokkaido, and also conducts field observations overseas, such as in Canada. It also develops highly sensitive spectroscopic instruments and instruments to be carried on satellites.
Hiromasa Tanaka, Professor
1 student voices
Tanaka Lab studies “life electronics,” which applies electronics to the life sciences. The lab applies low-temperature plasma technology to biology, working out at the molecular and genetic level how plasma affects living organisms. The lab investigates the mechanisms by which cells and tissues respond to plasma-activated solutions, which were developed independently at Nagoya University. The lab aims for applications in a wide range of fields, including medicine, agriculture, and fisheries.
Yasufumi Takahashi, Professor

Nano-Bio Measurement Lab develops new measurement technologies to uncover what has not been understood until now. The lab independently develops scanning probe microscopes that use extremely thin glass tubes and other tools to observe cells and materials in liquid at the nanoscale. Because the lab builds everything itself, from instrument hardware to measurement and analysis software, students also learn skills such as producing design drawings and building electronic circuits. The lab visualizes phenomena that were previously invisible, such as the growth of nerve cells and the workings of catalyst materials and rechargeable batteries.
Norihiko Nishizawa, Professor
1 student voices
Nishizawa Lab researches new laser technologies and laser measurement technologies. Using optical fibers, the lab builds ultrashort-pulse laser sources, which emit light for only an extremely short time, and controls that light freely. With the sources it has developed, the lab is developing optical frequency combs, ultrabroadband light, and technologies for measuring living tissue. Lasers are used in a wide range of fields, from basic research to industry and medicine, and the development of new applications is anticipated.
Takeshi Kato, Professor

The lab researches spintronics, which uses the electron's "spin," and nanospin devices. Spintronics, which uses both the charge and the spin of electrons, is expected to give rise to new devices such as magnetic memory and highly sensitive magnetic sensors. Such devices require nanoscale structures, and the lab studies everything from fabricating them to using them in devices. The lab is equipped with facilities for fabricating, processing, and measuring devices, an environment where students can turn their own ideas into reality.
Keiichi Mizutani, Professor
1 student voices
The Mizutani Lab aims to develop new wireless communication systems that will support the society of the future, and to create applications for them. Its research covers communication and modulation and demodulation schemes with 6G and Beyond 6G in view, wireless communication other than radio waves such as acoustic communication, and the application of machine learning to communications. Currently, the lab works on communication for three kinds of mobility: drones, vehicles traveling at high speed, and equipment operating underwater. The lab was established in April 2025, and its first cohort of students joined in April 2026.
