AboutAbout the lab
Ultra-precision technology for next-generation manufacturing
The Production Engineering Lab (Shamoto Lab) conducts research that creates ultra-precision technologies, based on new principles and ideas, to support next-generation manufacturing.
Built on two pillars, ultra-precision machining and production systems, the lab covers not only machining but also machine vibration and control, deformation and fracture of materials, and the use of fluids and heat.
Alongside their research, students also take part in hands-on training such as building AD converters, controlling servo motors, and measuring and analyzing machine vibration.
Individual lab visits are accepted at any time.
Key terms
- Elliptical vibration cutting
- A machining method in which the tool tip cuts while vibrating along a small elliptical path. It was devised by this lab
- Chatter vibration
- A phenomenon in which the tool or workpiece shakes violently during cutting. It is a cause of rough surface finish
- Servo motor
- A motor whose rotation angle and speed can be finely controlled exactly as commanded
ResearchResearch themes
The lab's research rests on two pillars: ultra-precision machining based on new principles and concepts, and production systems. To advance machining, the lab analyzes machining processes and works to clarify and suppress the phenomena that cause problems in machining.
*Illustrative imageUltra-Precision Machining by Elliptical Vibration Cutting
The lab devised its own machining method, "elliptical vibration cutting," in which the tool tip cuts while vibrating in an elliptical path, and aims to put it into practical use. It reduces cutting force and heat, and enables mirror finishing of hardened steel and glass, which is difficult with conventional cutting. The lab also works on analyzing and measuring the machining process and on applying the method to difficult-to-cut materials.
*Illustrative imageAnalysis and Suppression of Chatter Vibration
Chatter vibration, which easily occurs during cutting, degrades surface finish and machining accuracy and causes abnormal tool wear. For chatter in turning, end milling, and similar processes, the lab studies everything from fundamental research to the development of high-accuracy analytical models and effective methods for avoiding and suppressing it.
