The Environmental Economics Lab applies theories and methods from economics and management to issues such as environmental policy, natural resource management, and sustainable corporate activity. In economics, the lab studies theoretical economics and econometrics, and approaches problems related to cities, regions, and the environment from both microeconomic and macroeconomic perspectives. In management, in addition to theoretical research on organization theory, the lab uses field surveys and interviews to investigate strategic and organizational issues of companies and NPOs, as well as environment-related issues. Students in the lab can earn a degree in either “Economics” or “Environmental Studies.”

The Sociology Lab studies sociology, which clarifies social phenomena and social problems by focusing on the ways people relate to one another. With a history dating back to the arrival of Professor Kiyoji Honda in 1949, the lab has grown into a leading research center in both theory and empirical research. Building on the traditions and diverse currents of sociology, the lab aims to develop global sociological theory originating in Asia, and investigates regions in Japan and abroad and diverse fields using qualitative and quantitative methods. The lab welcomes students who wish to go on to graduate school, and is described as a lively, warm lab with peers who discuss with and inspire one another.

The Geography Lab (Department of Geography) conducts education and research across a wide range of fields in human geography and physical geography. The department began in 1950 as the Geography Chair of the Department of History in the Faculty of Letters. It now belongs to the Faculty of Letters at the undergraduate level and to the Department of Social and Human Environment, Graduate School of Environmental Studies, at the graduate level. Students can freely choose their research topics from fields such as human geography in general and geomorphology. The Graduate School of Environmental Studies also has faculty in climatology, meteorology, hydrology, and other fields, so students can receive broad guidance in collaboration with other departments.
