The Architecture and Environmental Design Lab conducts education and research on the planning, design, evaluation, and technology of architecture and the built environment. The lab takes a comprehensive, systematic approach to education and research that incorporates contemporary perspectives such as ecosystem conservation, reducing environmental impact, drawing on social, cultural, and historical contexts, and collaborating with citizens. The faculty's areas of expertise include architectural planning, places where people feel they belong, the reuse of decommissioned buildings, architectural design, modern architectural history, and campus planning.

The Building Structural Systems Lab belongs to the Architecture Division of the Department of Urban Environment, Graduate School of Environmental Studies, and studies the structures and materials of buildings in pursuit of safe and sustainable architecture and urban environments. Its education and research center on design methods for various structures such as reinforced concrete and timber, large-span spaces, composite structures, and seismically isolated and vibration-controlled structures. The lab also works on performance evaluation and performance-based design of building materials, and on the development of new materials. It also aims to build resource-recycling structural systems.
