Environmental Economics Lab
Machine-translated · View original
The lab takes on environmental and regional issues through economics and management.

AboutAbout the lab
A place to put into practice the design of society through “environment × economics.”
The Environmental Economics Lab applies theories and methods from economics and management to issues such as environmental policy, natural resource management, and sustainable corporate activity.
In economics, the lab studies theoretical economics and econometrics, and approaches problems related to cities, regions, and the environment from both microeconomic and macroeconomic perspectives.
In management, in addition to theoretical research on organization theory, the lab uses field surveys and interviews to investigate strategic and organizational issues of companies and NPOs, as well as environment-related issues.
Students in the lab can earn a degree in either “Economics” or “Environmental Studies.”

ResearchResearch themes
The lab explores complex issues of contemporary society, such as the environment, regions, and management (ESG/SDGs), using theories and methods from economics and management. In economics, it draws on both theory and empirical (econometric) analysis; in management, it studies the organizations of companies and NPOs, social entrepreneurship, and more.
*Illustrative imageLimits of Decentralized Environmental Policy
The lab examines how decentralized economic policymaking affects the economy as a whole when multiple regions are linked through trade and movements of capital and population. Through theoretical research, it also addresses the limits of decentralized environmental policies such as climate change measures, and ways to overcome them.
*Illustrative imageCorporate Environmental Initiatives and Consumer Preferences
Using empirical analysis based on statistics and econometrics, the lab investigates the factors that encourage companies to address environmental issues and the effects of those efforts. It also studies consumers' preferences regarding environmental and other issues when they choose products and companies.
*Illustrative imageThe Relationship Between Economic Activity and the Environment
The lab has examined, from a theoretical standpoint, the intuition that economic growth should be given up for the sake of environmental protection. It also studies how the market structure of resources, R&D and pollution levels, income distribution, residential location, and political factors affect environmental policy, as well as how the movement of goods and people affects the environment and the economy.
*Illustrative imageSocial Business and Social Entrepreneurship
The lab studies social business, which is increasingly important for building sustainable local communities, from the perspective of neo-institutional organization theory. Topics include the dynamics of social entrepreneurship and the domestication and institutionalization of innovative practices and ideas.
