Yoshimitsu Omi, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
Assistant Professor Omi is a faculty member in charge of the Environmental Landscape Management Program in the Department of Environmental Green Space, Faculty of Horticulture. Assistant Professor Omi's specialty is landscape architecture, and lists environmental landscape architecture, environmental planting science, and landscape planting management as areas of expertise. The research keywords listed in the faculty directory are landscape planning, urban greening, environmental education, and local environmental conservation.

Junhua Zhang, Professor

The Environmental Cultural History Lab approaches living spaces from the standpoint of the humanities, built around the three keywords of environment, culture, and history. A distinctive feature of the lab is that it examines various problems of landscape and cities through philosophy, art, cultural anthropology, and related fields. The lab does not treat landscape or environment as something to be handled physically, nor does it quantify and generalize them; instead, it takes the human spirit and the workings of the mind as its clues. In light of individual problems, the lab considers the process by which people have cultivated the world around them to make it livable and have passed down accounts of their lives. The content introduced here is based on the lab's 1996 description published on its website.

Shiro Takeda, Professor
0 student voices
This lab specializes in landscape design, garden design, and urban planning. Professor Takeda studied architecture at university, then studied landscape architecture at a graduate school in the United States, and has worked on architectural and landscape design at design firms in Japan and the United States. Students in the Environmental Landscape Design area submit design proposals to events such as student competitions of the Japanese Institute of Landscape Architecture, and have won awards.

Akira Kato, Associate Professor

The Green Space Environment and Resources Lab studies how to capture detailed forest structure using high-resolution laser scanning. Its main fields are forest remote sensing, GIS, and landscape ecology. In recent years, the lab has established a method for automatically conducting individual tree inventories from terrestrial laser scanning data, and uses it to estimate woody biomass in satoyama (traditional managed woodland near farming communities) and to quantify ecosystem services. Currently, the lab is deploying terrestrial laser scanners in forests around the world, including tropical and temperate forests, and working to establish on-site monitoring techniques that can be used to validate satellite observations.

Terumasa Takahashi, Professor
0 student voices
Professor Takahashi of the Green Space Environment and Resources Lab specializes in ecosystem ecology, revegetation engineering, and landscape gardening. The professor's work has covered a wide range of green spaces, from mountain forests to satoyama, urban parks, and coastal tidal flats. The lab investigates the properties and improvement of the soil that serves as the foundation for planting (planting substrate), as well as how materials cycle within green spaces (material cycles). The professor always tries to consider how current education and research can be put to use and be useful in real-world settings.

Katsuki Umeda, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Umeda of the Green Space Environmental Systems Lab specializes in economic geography. The associate professor analyzes the restructuring taking place in dairy and dairy processing industries and in vegetable horticulture from a spatial perspective. In Tuscany, Italy, and in New Zealand, the lab studies how farms sustain their livelihoods by making use of organic farming and agritourism. Associate Professor Umeda belongs to the Faculty of Education and has an office on the Nishi-Chiba Campus, and is in charge of teaching in the Landscape Science Course of the Graduate School of Horticulture.

Shinichi Kurihara, Professor
0 student voices
Prof. Kurihara, of the field of Resource and Environmental Economics, specializes in regional planning and policy evaluation. The lab also studies food safety, social security systems, and the role communities play in their regions. In the faculty's staff directory, Prof. Kurihara lists reputational damage from rumors, river basin flood management, and consumer behavior as research keywords. In classes, Prof. Kurihara teaches econometrics, which is built on statistics, and marketing research (market research).

Atsushi Maruyama, Professor
0 student voices
Prof. Maruyama of the Resource and Environmental Economics Lab specializes in agricultural economics and applied econometrics. The lab works on research that evaluates the environment and food safety using economic methods, as well as research on how people perceive danger (risk perception). The lab also conducts empirical research on consumer and producer behavior, economic efficiency, and agriculture in developing countries. In classes, Prof. Maruyama teaches courses such as information processing and environmental and resource economics at the undergraduate level, and evaluation of bioresources and the environment at the graduate level.

Kosuke Kato, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
Assistant Professor Kato, of the field of Resource and Environmental Economics, specializes in agricultural economics. The lab works on applying quantitative analysis using data mining methods to research questions related to food and agriculture. In the future, the lab hopes to incorporate social simulation methods such as agent-based simulation, and to deepen its research in an interdisciplinary way.

Yuanyuan Teng, Lecturer
0 student voices
Lecturer Teng, in the field of Resource and Environmental Economics, specializes in regional economics, human geography, and Chinese regional studies. Lecturer Teng is interested in how human mobility and regional change influence each other, and conducts fieldwork mainly in China and Japan. The lab analyzes the resettlement of "land-expropriated farmers" in China, who lost their land and housing to urban development, and the relationship between foreign residents in Japan and their local communities.
