The Nanomaterials Optical Measurement Lab (Uji-i Lab) develops new measurement methods using next-generation optical nanomaterials. Its main research includes synthesizing nanomaterials with optical functions, controlling chemical reactions using strong coupling, drug transport systems (drug delivery systems), and developing Raman measurement methods for probing the inside of a single cell. The lab explores applications of "surface plasmons," in which light and electrons oscillate together on the surface of metal nanostructures, from the standpoints of photochemistry and photophysics.

The Coherent Light Lab (Nishino Lab) uses coherent X-rays, such as X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) and advanced storage-ring synchrotron radiation, to develop new imaging techniques and pursue applied research. Using large facilities such as SACLA, SPring-8, and NanoTerasu, the lab aims to contribute to progress in a wide range of fields, from life science and materials science to industrial applications. Its research includes coherent diffraction imaging, X-ray Fourier ptychography, and atomic-resolution X-ray holography.

The Photonic Information and Life Science Lab (Mikami Lab) makes full use of optical and information technologies to create life science tools that overturn conventional wisdom. Alongside opening up new science, the lab aims to give its research back to society by putting the technologies it develops to practical use. With its strength in understanding light thoroughly and controlling it freely, the lab develops measurement technologies that extract the information needed from living systems, as well as data processing and analysis technologies, and actively incorporates AI. The lab actively collaborates not only within the lab but also with external collaborators.

The Media Dynamics Lab analyzes data from diverse perspectives and continues to create "knowledge," the source of innovation for solving social problems. Beyond proposing original new technologies, the lab aims for their real-world deployment, working to build a new society where AI and humans collaborate. In addition to general images, music, and video, its research targets a wide range of data, including medical images and social infrastructure data. The lab incorporates problem-based learning into its research and contributes to society by opening the demonstration systems it builds to the general public.

The Information Media Environment Lab works on a variety of topics in computer graphics (CG). Its core interests are efficient rendering, fluid simulation, sound simulation, image-based methods, controllable graphics, haptics, and digital fabrication. The lab researches and develops mechanisms that let users freely manipulate information in 3D space and easily create CG video. With faculty members who specialize in human visual perception, the lab conducts research that uses CG to understand human information processing, as well as research on CG that exploits human visual perception.

The Language Media Lab is an AI lab aiming for natural and safe language processing. It seeks to reshape how machines understand and use natural language, from both creative and practical sides. Going beyond classical natural language processing, the lab combines insights from various fields with both the latest and past results in AI. In a multicultural group that spans disciplines, students can choose their own research topics, with bilingual supervision and support for studying abroad.

The Media Creation Lab studies multimodal signal processing and machine learning that handle different kinds of data, such as images, text, and biological information, together. Centered on information science, the lab pursues interdisciplinary research in collaboration with researchers in other fields. It applies AI in a wide range of areas, including infrastructure inspection, sports, the analysis of gaze and brain activity, and emotion recognition. The lab also researches recommender systems, which select and present items that match a user's preferences, in multiple domains such as music, finance, and fashion.

The Information and Communication Networks Lab studies technologies for processing multimedia information such as audio and video in real time and transmitting it wirelessly. From both the hardware and software sides, the lab builds communication systems and networks that are fast and consume little power. It works on MIMO transmission methods, which send and receive simultaneously through multiple antennas, and on speech recognition that can pick out speech even amid noise. To run processing without delay, the lab is also implementing its methods on FPGAs, which are rewritable integrated circuits.

The Information and Communication Photonics Lab studies technologies that expand the amount of data communication can carry, using optical fibers and optical circuits. As the spread of the internet and AI keeps increasing data traffic, mechanisms that carry more signals through a single optical fiber are needed. The lab works on mode-division multiplexing, which superimposes signals by using differences in how light propagates, and on the design of optical fibers with multiple cores. For on-chip optical circuits used in coherent optical communication, the lab conducts prototyping and experimental evaluation in addition to theoretical design.

The Intelligent Information and Communications Lab studies new communication methods, centered on wireless signal processing. Around the world, research and development on 6G is under way, aiming for practical use around 2030. In 6G, wireless networks that embed AI into the network and integrate communication, sensing, and computing are expected. Using signal processing and machine learning, the lab aims to create communication methods that deliver "the necessary information, to the necessary recipient, in the optimal form."
