Dental Anesthesiology Lab
Machine-translated · View original
A lab of systemic management and anesthesia that protects patients from the pain and fear of dental treatment.

AboutAbout the lab
Protecting patients from the pain and fear of treatment.
The lab studies dental anesthesiology, also called systemic management and invasion control (control of surgical stress) in dentistry.
In oral surgery and in dental treatment for people with disabilities and for children, the lab uses general anesthesia and intravenous sedation to support patients so that they can receive treatment safely.
It puts particular emphasis on research on postoperative pain and on the prevention of postoperative delirium, which occurs after surgery.
Another goal is to free patients from chronic pain and numbness in the face and mouth.
Key terms
- Intravenous sedation
- A method of giving drugs through an IV drip so that the patient can receive dental treatment in a drowsy, calm state
- Postoperative delirium
- A condition in which consciousness becomes temporarily confused after surgery, causing agitation or incoherent speech
- Lipid raft
- A small domain in the cell membrane where particular lipids and proteins gather

ResearchResearch themes
The lab aims to protect all patients from the pain and fear caused by dental treatment and surgery and to provide a safe, comfortable perioperative period. To this end, it conducts basic and clinical research on postoperative pain, the action of general anesthetics, anesthesia for older adults, and postoperative delirium.
*Illustrative imageMechanisms of and countermeasures for postoperative pain
Using animal models that reproduce pain after surgery, the lab investigates how postoperative pain arises from the perspectives of pain behavior, the electrical activity of nerves, and genes. It also studies the mechanisms by which pain becomes prolonged and conducts clinical research on anesthetic management methods that reduce postoperative pain.
*Illustrative imageEffects of general anesthetics on cells
Using cultured cells, the lab focuses on lipid rafts in the cell membrane and studies how general anesthetics affect cells.
*Illustrative imageBlood pressure changes during anesthesia in older adults
The lab examines in elderly patients how blood pressure at the start of anesthesia changes depending on the anesthetic used, and explores safer ways of starting anesthesia for older adults.
*Illustrative imageResearch on postoperative delirium
As surgeries in older adults increase, postoperative delirium has become a problem. The lab searches for biomarkers that predict its onset and creates animal models in order to elucidate how it develops.
MembersFaculty
Members of the lab consist of faculty, graduate students (doctoral program), residents, clinical professors, visiting clinical professors, visiting clinical lecturers, visiting clinical assistant professors, and visiting clinical physicians. The lab also provides clinical care as the Dental Anesthesiology department of Hokkaido University Hospital. As of 2026
