The lab studies how neural stem cells in the brain, and the progenitor cells one step before mature cell types, proliferate and differentiate into other cell types. It investigates how stem cells and progenitor cells change with age, how fates such as aging and cancerous transformation are determined, and how this leads to disease. Based on this knowledge, the lab aims to develop new therapies. The lab belongs to the Institute for Genetic Medicine and corresponds to the Stem Cell Biology Laboratory in the Department of Cancer Pathology at the Graduate School of Medicine.

The lab aims to elucidate how cancer develops and to develop drugs to treat it. Using a variety of materials, including human specimens, Drosophila, and mice, it carries out research in genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, and drug discovery science. Recently, the lab has been focusing on pancreatic cancer, for which treatment options are extremely limited. Lab visits are accepted, and the lab welcomes people who want to do research in the master's or doctoral program.

The Higher Brain Function Emergence Lab studies the mechanisms of higher brain functions such as language, cognition, action, and memory. Its research and practice aim not only to keep the brain healthy but also to foster the emergence of even higher abilities. The lab approaches this from two sides: clinical research that uses the symptoms of patients with brain damage as clues, and research that visualizes brain activity. The lab believes that people with age-related changes, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), or dementia still have many abilities that can be put to use.

The Pediatric Nursing Lab conducts research with the aim that children grow up healthy, and that the families raising them can raise children while also caring for their own health and quality of life (QOL). Thanks to advances in medicine, more children now live at home while receiving medical care, and the environment surrounding their families has changed significantly. The lab continues research on the health of families raising children, on care and services for children and families, and on the role of the community. It is also involved in the joint development of a simulator for learning endotracheal suctioning for children on ventilators, and in nursing research that supports the transition from hospital to home.
