The Architectural Structures Lab studies the behavior of building structures on the basis of mechanics and computational engineering, and develops optimal design methods. Technology is needed that keeps costs and materials as low as possible while ensuring only as much safety and functionality as necessary. The lab combines the latest information technologies such as AI with theories of mechanics and mathematics to propose methods for designing high-performance buildings, including considerations of aesthetics and ease of construction. Lecturer Hayashi's lab also studies design methods based on new computational techniques, such as structural optimization and design that takes ease of construction into account.

The Architecture and Social Systems Engineering Lab studies the legal systems, people and organizations, and technologies involved in constructing buildings. Building involves the stages of planning, design, construction, maintenance, and demolition. Covering this whole process, the lab studies the roles of the people involved and the building production systems that they create. Together with internationally active practitioners and researchers, the lab conducts empirical research that covers not only Japan but also other countries. It is led by Professor Kaneta and Associate Professor Nishino, and is also called the Kaneta-Nishino Lab.

The Spatial Structure Development Engineering Lab studies building structures that make the most of the properties of steel materials. It aims to develop and preserve structural spaces that meet diverse and advanced requirements, such as those for resisting earthquakes. The lab is working to establish, through both analysis and experiments, design methods based on the behavior of members such as columns and beams and of the joints joining them. It is led by Professor Koetaka and Lecturer Inamasu, and is also called the Koetaka-Inamasu Lab.

The Human Settlement Studies Lab studies living spaces such as cities, villages, buildings, and homes in terms of their relationship to regional character, culture, and time. The lab includes the Kanki Lab, which works on urban and rural planning that inherits regional history and envisions how the spaces, environments, and activities of daily life are protected and continue to evolve. It also includes the Yanagisawa Lab, which studies traditional housing in Asia and methods for renovating and regenerating buildings, and gives the results back to society through design and workshops. The lab places importance on surveys and practice in the field, in Japan and abroad.

The Urban Space Engineering Lab studies how to maintain everyday environments in buildings and cities, and how to ensure safety in the event of a fire. The lab aims to integrate urban and building environments well while reducing energy use and CO2. Ensuring safety in a fire in new kinds of spaces, such as huge high-rise buildings and underground spaces, is also an important theme. Through experiments and analysis of how fires burn and how smoke spreads, the lab aims to realize fire-resistant timber buildings and buildings that allow safe evacuation.

The Acoustic Environment Lab studies how the acoustic environments of buildings and cities should be, and how to control them to achieve the best possible state. The acoustic environment is a major factor in the quality of a space, and controlling it is essential to creating low-stress environments. Considering both the physical properties of sound and the responses of the human body and mind, the lab develops new acoustic materials and technologies for measuring, predicting, controlling, and presenting sound fields. The lab aims for acoustic environments with fewer unpleasant sounds, more comfortable music, and clearer conversation.

The Building Vibration Lab studies structural design that uses vibration control and seismic isolation technologies to protect buildings from earthquakes that are difficult to predict. The lab considers the most dangerous ground motion for each building (the worst-case ground motion) and aims to establish a framework for structural design that takes redundancy and robustness into account. Prof. Ikago also studies vibration control devices using an inerter, as well as countermeasures against long-period ground motion. The lab encourages students to present their research in English, with the goal of nurturing people who can be active internationally.

The Building Earthquake Engineering Lab clarifies, through theory and experiments, how buildings shake and collapse during earthquakes, in order to ensure their safety against earthquakes. By combining experiments and numerical analysis, the lab reproduces how members fail under repeated deformation and how they behave until complete collapse. The lab aims to compile these results and use them to develop more advanced seismic design methods. The lab belongs to the Disaster Prevention Research Institute (Uji Campus) and is also known as the Yoshiki-Kurata Lab.

The Building Safety Control Lab comprehensively studies earthquake disaster prevention for buildings and cities, aiming to create safe and secure communities. Going beyond individual buildings, the lab broadly studies disaster prevention for entire cities, as collections of buildings, through theory, experiments, surveys, and observation. The lab develops methods for predicting damage from earthquakes and fires, uses simulations to predict damage, and considers measures to reduce it. It is a lab of the Disaster Prevention Research Institute (Uji Campus), also known as the Sakai-Nishino Lab.

The Building Wind Engineering Lab conducts research to reduce disasters caused by strong winds and gusts from typhoons, tornadoes, and similar events. Through observation, experiments, and numerical simulation, the lab clarifies the flow of wind around buildings, how buildings sway, and the process leading up to building failure. The lab also researches risk management, which evaluates the impact of damage and considers effective ways to reduce disasters. It also studies the use of wind as a resource, and proposes architecture and urban development that coexist with wind.
