Architecture and Social Systems Engineering Lab
Machine-translated · View original
The lab investigates who builds buildings and how, and the systems behind architectural production.

AboutAbout the lab
Building a sound system for building production
The Architecture and Social Systems Engineering Lab studies the legal systems, people and organizations, and technologies involved in constructing buildings.
Building involves the stages of planning, design, construction, maintenance, and demolition. Covering this whole process, the lab studies the roles of the people involved and the building production systems that they create.
Together with internationally active practitioners and researchers, the lab conducts empirical research that covers not only Japan but also other countries.
It is led by Professor Kaneta and Associate Professor Nishino, and is also called the Kaneta-Nishino Lab.
Key terms
- BIM
- Technology that incorporates information such as cost and management into a 3D building model on a computer and uses it from design through maintenance
- Building production
- The series of activities from planning, designing, constructing, and maintaining a building to demolishing it
- ICT
- Technology for exchanging information using computers and communications
ResearchResearch themes
Targeting building production systems, the lab pursues international and interdisciplinary research on planning and management techniques for building production activities and on systems of project management.
*Illustrative imageStrategies for Making the Most of BIM
BIM is expected to transform the building production process significantly, but in Japan issues such as authority and responsibility for coordinating drawings hinder its use. The lab analyzes the causes by comparing Japan with Singapore and the United States, and proposes solutions.
*Illustrative imageInternational Comparison of Building Production Systems
The actors and institutions involved in building production differ from country to country. Through surveys of construction sites overseas and international conferences that invite researchers from various countries, the lab compares procurement and contract methods and quality assurance mechanisms in Japan, China, South Korea, the United States, the United Kingdom, and elsewhere.
*Illustrative imageRaising Construction Site Productivity with ICT
Against a backdrop of a shrinking construction workforce and work-style reform, productivity improvement using ICT is being promoted. Working with product development companies and design offices, the lab studies how new technologies affect construction sites and how they help improve productivity.
