The Environmental Materials Lab examines the condition of materials, focusing on interior and exterior building finishes and reinforced concrete members. From the constituent materials, the pore structure, and the behavior of water inside a material, the lab evaluates and predicts the material's performance and condition. The findings are applied to evaluating the durability of buildings and to their maintenance management. The lab also collaborates with researchers in fields that architecture has not traditionally involved, such as nanotechnology and microbial ecology.

The Architectural Conservation and Regeneration Lab studies ways to improve the seismic safety of cities and buildings against earthquake disasters. It examines how well buildings can resist collapse under large-amplitude ground motion (collapse margin ratio) and develops design methods that improve seismic safety. For traditional wooden buildings, it clarifies how they shake during earthquakes and is building up methods for seismic assessment. The lab addresses not only the natural-science side but also social aspects such as history and culture, working on measures to conserve and regenerate cities and regions.

The Human Living Environment Lab scientifically investigates how people perceive and behave in response to light and color, and considers what living environments suited to people should be like. Based on these findings, it empirically studies models for evaluating the visual environment and design methods. The lab includes the Ishida Lab, which studies light and color, and the Komiyama Lab, which studies architectural design. The Komiyama Lab studies architectural design from the perspectives of architectural construction methods and architectural information.

The Architectural History Lab studies the history of Japanese architecture and cities and considers how to pass historic buildings and townscapes on to the future. It aims to understand architecture and cities comprehensively, not only in terms of style and technology but also together with society, religion, culture, and the natural environment. Members read old records and Buddhist scriptures and conduct surveys at temples, archaeological sites, and excavation sites. It is the lab of Professor Tomishima and Associate Professor Iwamoto, and is also called the Tomishima-Iwamoto Lab.

The International Architectural Criticism Lab studies the development of contemporary Japanese architecture from the standpoint of theory and criticism. The lab believes that now, when design and construction technologies have become highly advanced, it is all the more necessary to ask the fundamental question of why buildings have been built. By carefully reading texts, images, and the buildings themselves, the lab situates architecture within the broad contexts of art, culture, politics, and economics. Students work on both writing critical texts and experimental design.

The Building Construction Lab develops high-performance members and structures, mainly for buildings made of concrete, and studies design methods for them. The lab aims to protect the safety and property of the people who use buildings against earthquakes, fires, deterioration, and other hazards, and to provide comfortable spaces over a long period of time. The lab combines structural experiments using scaled specimens with computer-based numerical analysis such as the finite element method. The lab is also called the Tani Lab, and on its website it invites people to "come and hear more."

The Architectural Environment and Planning Lab analyzes and evaluates architecture and communities from the perspectives of the psychology, behavior, and relationships of the people who use them, and applies the results to design and planning. In addition to efficiency and function, the lab aims for architecture that enhances people's well-being (living well). The results of this research are also applied to actual design of healthcare and welfare facilities, offices, streetscapes, and more. The lab is led by Professor Miura and Associate Professor Sakatani, and is also called the Miura-Sakatani Lab.

The lab studies methods of regulating buildings and their surrounding environments to realize architecture where people can live in health, comfort, and peace of mind. While taking the global environment into account, the lab focuses mainly on heat and moisture problems related to buildings and cultural properties. It also studies how to preserve and open to the public cultural heritage such as mural paintings, burial mounds (kofun), and cliff-face Buddhas (magaibutsu) without damaging them. Targeting a wide variety of buildings in Japan and abroad, the lab carries out everything from field surveys to calculation, analysis, and experiments.

Through projects that design actual buildings, the lab studies new design methods and theories for lively spaces. Focusing on architectural space as the foundation of social life, the lab examines the meaning and formation of space and builds design theories for spaces that are organic and full of diversity. Taking on experimental design activities that are possible precisely because it is a university lab, the lab considers what architecture should be in the future. The lab is led by Professor Hirata and is also known as the Hirata Lab.

The lab explores architectural theory, which fundamentally asks what "good architecture" is, through both research and architectural design. Considering architecture not as a convenient tool or a work of art but as a world of life shared by people, the lab probes what a place means for human beings. In addition to architectural theory, the lab studies urban theory and theory of landscape, and also makes architectural and urban design proposals based on surveys in the Higashikujo district of Kyoto. With many international students, the lab has a strong international character. It is also known as the Taji-Inomata Lab.
