The Speech Media Lab studies how to analyze the way people interact by voice and how to have machines recognize and understand it. The lab builds systems that transcribe natural spoken language, such as in meetings and lectures, and systems that make sense of environments where many kinds of sounds are mixed together. The lab also works on separating singing voice from accompaniment and transcribing music into scores from music audio signals. The lab aims to realize humanoid robots that can converse naturally, including nods and timing as well as words.

The Coexistence Design Lab studies communication technology that deepens connections between people. From the standpoint of human-computer interaction, the lab aims for a society in which everyone, while holding diverse values, can support one another. Grounded in theories of behavioral science and social psychology, the lab uses observation of people and surveys to uncover the needs of the field and the essence of interaction. Its distinguishing feature is that it does not pursue the advancement of information technology itself, but designs technology based on this understanding.

The Mathematical Analysis Lab conducts research ranging from mathematics to computer science, with "applied integrable systems" as its keyword. An integrable system is a nonlinear dynamical system whose solutions can be written down explicitly; the soliton waves traveling on shallow water are a well-known example. Because computers can handle only discrete values, putting an integrable system on a computer requires discretizing time and space. Building on the connection between discretized integrable systems and numerical algorithms, the lab works from mathematical theory through to implementation on computers.

The Discrete Mathematics Lab mainly studies optimization problems known as combinatorial optimization (discrete optimization). Combinatorial optimization is a field of the foundational theory of computer science, and it is expected to find applications in many fields, including operations research, management, and economics. From the standpoint of discrete mathematics, the lab investigates the mathematical properties of problems and develops algorithms that put the results to use in solving concrete problems.

The Mathematical Optimization Lab studies the theory and applications of mathematical optimization. Mathematical optimization means turning a wide range of social problems into mathematical models, finding solutions with algorithms suited to those models, and putting those solutions into practice as solutions to the problems. The lab's basic policy is to conduct theory-focused research while keeping a firm eye on applications to real-world problems.

The Control Systems Theory Lab studies the mathematical modeling of problems, the analysis of dynamics, the development of theory for designing control systems, and applications of that theory. The lab tackles challenges that current control technology cannot solve, such as problems arising from large scale and networking, and quantum information processing technology. A distinguishing feature is that the lab actively draws on advanced mathematics and on knowledge of probability, statistics, and machine learning as needed. The lab is run jointly with the Applied Mathematical Modeling field (a collaborating unit).

The Physical Statistics Lab aims to understand, in a unified mathematical way, the complex phenomena that arise when many elements strongly influence one another, and to apply that understanding to information processing. The lab studies systems in which many elements are intertwined: molecules gather to form matter, people gather to form society, and connected computers form the Internet. The lab analyzes these systems using nonequilibrium statistical physics, computer experiments, stochastic process theory, dynamical systems theory, chaos theory, and more.

The Mathematics of Dynamical Systems Lab studies the theory of dynamical systems, which covers all kinds of mathematical models that change over time. Its goal is to uncover complex phenomena such as chaos and bifurcation that occur in various systems in the natural sciences and engineering, and to create new engineering technologies. The lab takes on the development of new dynamical systems theories that go beyond conventional theory, and also uses verified numerical computation and large-scale numerical simulation.

The Mathematical Information Systems Lab aims to take a cross-disciplinary, mathematical view of the many problems of information processing in uncertain environments and to resolve them. Much of today's information processing is expressed by large-scale probabilistic models, and making use of the laws that emerge from that large scale is the key to advanced information processing. The lab's research spans many fields, including information theory, communication theory, probability theory, statistical science, statistical mechanics, and machine learning.

The Statistical Intelligence Lab (Shimodaira-Honda Lab) studies the methodology of statistics and machine learning, from theory to applications. Statistics plays an important role as the theoretical foundation supporting data science and artificial intelligence. In research on theory and methods, the lab emphasizes mathematics and programming, and in applications it works with natural language processing and biological data.
