A solid-state chemistry lab that creates new functional materials from transition metal oxides.

The Advanced Inorganic Solid-State Chemistry Lab (Shimakawa Lab) studies the solid-state chemistry of transition metal oxides, centered on the exploration, design, synthesis, and evaluation of "functional materials." Working with inorganic materials, the lab synthesizes substances that show interesting physical properties by exploiting the characteristics of elements, seeks to understand those substances, and, based on the knowledge gained, designs and explores new materials.
