The Integrated Nano-Analytical Chemistry Lab uses a variety of electron microscopes to observe materials directly at the molecular and atomic scale, and analyzes their structures and physical properties. Defects and interface structures that are averaged out and hidden in X-ray diffraction can be seen as real-space images with a microscope. By combining energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), the lab also investigates composition and electronic states at the nanoscale.

The Atomic and Molecular Structure Lab determines the three-dimensional structures of proteins, which carry out biological functions, at atomic resolution by X-ray crystallography, and studies the relationship between the structure of protein molecules and their functions and properties from the perspective of structural biology. The lab aims to elucidate how enzymes recognize their substrates and the mechanisms of their catalytic reactions, as well as the strategies by which proteins of microorganisms living in extreme high- or low-temperature environments adapt to those environments.
