The Aquatic Environmental Analytical Chemistry Lab studies trace elements and isotopes to clarify the present, past, and future of aquatic environments such as oceans and lakes. The lab conducts interdisciplinary research spanning analytical chemistry, geochemistry, marine chemistry, oceanography, limnology, geology, and environmental science.

The Molecular Environment Analytical Chemistry Lab (Hasegawa Lab) seeks to understand the functions of compounds by examining molecular packing, arrangement, orientation, and interactions at the level of individual functional groups. Rather than taking textbook pictures at face value, the lab studies in detail the chemical makeup of the devices we have in hand today. Its three pillars are organofluorine science, multiple-angle incidence resolution spectrometry (MAIRS), and organic semiconductors.

The Molecular Microbial Science Lab (Kurihara Lab) aims to elucidate the mechanisms behind diverse life phenomena in microorganisms through biochemical approaches and to develop applications from them. The lab studies the molecular basis of environmental adaptation in microbes living in extreme environments, novel enzymes that catalyze unique reactions, lipids that form biological membranes, and membrane vesicles that microbes release outside the cell. Based on these findings, it develops new ways of using microorganisms that are useful for purposes such as chemical production.
