The Steady-State Plasma Heating Lab studies the physics and engineering of nuclear fusion using QUEST, Japan's largest spherical tokamak device. Its work includes methods for heating plasma and sustaining current with electromagnetic waves, diagnostic techniques for measuring plasma conditions, and the development of components that handle high-power millimeter waves. Much of the equipment needed for plasma research has to be built in-house, and the lab says that this allows members to build up knowledge, skills, and experience. On the lab's website, the Steady-State Plasma Heating Lab and the Plasma Wave Science and Engineering Lab are introduced together under the name "Idei-Ikezoe Lab (IIlab)."

The Steady-State Plasma Control Lab studies how to maintain and control high-temperature plasma in steady state, using the spherical tokamak experimental device QUEST. Because the interaction between plasma and the vessel wall changes with wall temperature, the lab carries out particle control experiments and modeling using a high-temperature wall. The lab also studies radio-frequency plasma heating and plasma current drive using coaxial helicity injection, working on fundamental research for fusion reactor development. The lab conducts education and research in cooperation with the Idei-Ikezoe Lab and the Ido Lab.

The Boundary Plasma Experiment and Analysis Lab experimentally studies turbulent plasma and its structure formation. Turbulence is thought to play a major role as a mechanism by which plasma escapes (turbulent transport), and understanding it is essential for realizing nuclear fusion. The main education and research theme is how to precisely measure fluctuations at various time and spatial scales, and how to analyze the resulting data to find new insights and laws. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Nagashima Lab."

The Plasma Wave Science and Engineering Lab focuses on waves and fluctuations in fusion plasma and studies their properties and control. Combining experiments, measurements, and simulations, the lab investigates instabilities that occur in high-temperature plasma and interactions between waves and particles. The lab also works on reducing heat and particle loads on the divertor with RF (electromagnetic waves), and on the motion of high-energy electrons. Research is carried out at the spherical tokamak device QUEST on the Chikushi Campus. On the lab's website, it is introduced together with the Steady-State Plasma Heating Lab (Prof. Idei) under the name "Idei-Ikezoe Lab."

The Marine Environment and Energy Engineering Lab studies the interaction between free-surface flow and structures of complex shape related to ocean energy and the marine environment. The lab works on coupled analysis of free-surface flow and elastic structures, and on multiscale, multiphysics simulation. To that end, the lab develops and applies new computational fluid dynamics methods, alongside related theoretical and experimental research. The lab's website introduces it as the "Marine Environment and Energy Engineering Lab."

The Advanced Offshore Wind Energy Utilization Lab aims to improve the ability to understand and predict local wind flows at the height of human living spaces. Taking the growing demand for offshore wind power as a pillar of its research, the lab works through indoor experiments in a large wind tunnel and numerical wind simulations on supercomputers. The lab also conducts field wind observations using remote sensing instruments and drones. The lab's website also introduces it as the "Uchida Lab."

The Combined Renewable Energy Utilization Lab researches technologies for increasing the deployment of renewable energy that uses fluid dynamics, starting with wind power. Using fluid dynamics, mechanical dynamics, control engineering, electrical engineering, mechatronics, and more, the lab conducts research and development on technologies for larger scale, lower cost, and higher performance. For commercial wind turbines and floating offshore wind turbines, the lab carries out modeling, design, control, and evaluation. At the graduate level, the lab accepts students as a cooperating laboratory of the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Environmental Systems, Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Engineering Sciences.

The Next-Generation Renewable Energy Technology Lab studies offshore renewable energy systems and their control under wind, wave, and ocean current conditions. It focuses on improving the efficiency of harvesting energy offshore and reducing the cost of energy. Specific topics include power generation systems that combine wind and wave power, digital twins of floating offshore wind turbines, data-driven simulation methods, control of large wind turbines, and the stability of ship-towing systems. This lab is run jointly with the Marine Environmental Energy Engineering Lab.

The Turbulence Data Analysis Lab is staffed by Associate Professor Makoto Hasegawa and Assistant Professor Kazuhito Ohsawa of the Research Institute for Applied Mechanics. Associate Professor Hasegawa works on controlling tokamak plasmas using methods such as machine learning, and on developing systems for collecting large volumes of data. Assistant Professor Ohsawa uses simulations based on first-principles calculations to study tungsten, an important fusion reactor material, including the interaction between vacancies and hydrogen. Both also hold appointments in the Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Engineering Sciences, Department of Interdisciplinary Engineering Sciences.
