The Data-Driven Research Unit is one of the research units at the Center for Ocean Plastic Studies (COPS) of the Research Institute for Applied Mechanics, Kyushu University. As a satellite research base of the Research Institute for Applied Mechanics, COPS promotes interdisciplinary and international research on ocean plastic pollution, microplastics, and ocean sustainability. Professor Isobe, a faculty member of the unit, is particularly interested in the transport and formation processes of microplastics among the transport processes of drifting and beached debris. Assistant Professor Kuroda studies seawater from the surface down to a depth of 1,000 m to understand how small microplastics are distributed in the ocean.

The Field-Driven Research Unit is one of the research units at the Center for Ocean Plastic Studies (COPS) of the Research Institute for Applied Mechanics, Kyushu University. As a satellite research base of the Research Institute for Applied Mechanics, the center promotes interdisciplinary and international research on ocean plastic pollution, microplastics, and ocean sustainability. Papers first-authored by the unit's faculty include a study that confirmed microplastics in zooplankton collected in the Gulf of Thailand, and a study on organisms attached to seafloor debris. The website covers the whole center, and information on the Data-Driven Research Unit and the Analysis-Driven Research Unit is posted on the same site.

The Analysis-Driven Research Unit Lab studies the marine environment based on ocean observations and works to advance analytical methods for microplastics. It also analyzes oceanic physical phenomena such as turbulence and surface currents, and investigates the distribution of marine debris. For microplastic analysis, the lab addresses international harmonization as well as methodological advancement. The unit belongs to the Center for Ocean Plastic Studies (COPS) at the Research Institute for Applied Mechanics, Kyushu University, and the lab's website introduces the center as a whole.
