Kaname Matsue, Professor
0 student voices
The Matsue Lab studies the properties of "strange" and "singular" behavior that arises in differential equations, using dynamical systems theory and numerical analysis. The research is grounded in applied mathematics: dynamical systems theory, differential equations, and numerical analysis (especially verified numerical computation). The lab focuses mainly on finite-time singularities, such as solutions of differential equations blowing up in finite time, and also tackles problems that originate in combustion and energy issues. Prof. Matsue also serves as a WPI Professor at the International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research at Kyushu University.

Akihiro Yamaguchi, Professor
0 student voices
Prof. Yamaguchi lists explainable AI (XAI), interpretability, machine learning, and time series data mining as research topics. Prof. Yamaguchi is a Professor in the Liaison Strategy Division at the Institute of Mathematics for Industry, Kyushu University. In the papers listed in the researcher profile, the work deals with AI that classifies time series data, and with methods that let people interpret trained classifiers.

Akifumi Kira, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Kira's lab specializes in mathematical optimization and studies the theory of dynamic programming and its applications. The lab is interested in problems that require repeated decision-making and problems that involve uncertainty. It also works on social mathematics, which uses mathematical techniques such as optimization and game theory to design fair and widely accepted systems and policies. Associate Professor Kira has developed technologies in collaboration with practitioners in the field, for example on childcare center admission allocation and joint transportation matching.

Daisuke Tagami, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Daisuke Tagami's lab works in applied mathematics and computational mechanics. The lab is interested in developing methods for solving partial differential equations numerically, estimating their errors, and applying them to real-world problems. Specifically, it works on numerical analysis of particle methods, building large-scale numerical methods for electromagnetic field problems, and numerical analysis of viscoelastic flow problems.

Pierluigi Cesana, Professor
0 student voices
The Partial Differential Equations and Calculus of Variations Lab investigates problems in elasticity theory and functional materials, building on partial differential equations and vector-valued calculus of variations. Its research includes mathematically modeling defects that arise in crystal lattices and using machine learning to study the properties of molecules. The lab also studies anomalies that appear in blockchain transactions. Professor Pierluigi Cesana is also a faculty member of the Department of Mathematics in the Graduate School of Mathematics and of the Graduate School of Mathematics for Innovation.

Yasuhiko Ikematsu, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Yasuhiko Ikematsu's lab studies the development of post-quantum cryptography, which is considered hard to break even with quantum computers. It is particularly interested in multivariate polynomial cryptography, which is built on the hardness of solving systems of multivariate quadratic equations. Although multivariate polynomial cryptography is considered a strong candidate, it faces challenges: its public keys are large, and analysis using Gröbner bases is insufficient. The lab aims to resolve these challenges. The lab's website describes it as studying number theory and cryptography.

Tetsuhiro Moriyama, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Applied Topology and Industry-Academia Collaboration Lab studies topology at the Institute of Mathematics for Industry. Besides studying configuration spaces of points and finite-type topological invariants, the lab also does research that uses topology in applied fields such as image analysis and multidimensional data analysis. Associate Professor Tetsuhiro Moriyama is in charge of industry-academia collaboration and the AIMaP project. Associate Professor Moriyama is also a member of the Next-Generation Manufacturing Innovation Promotion Hub, a joint research promotion hub established in October 2025 by Kyushu University and Sumitomo Wiring Systems.
