The lab uses mice to investigate the neural circuits in the brain that generate REM sleep.

AboutAbout the lab
How is REM sleep generated?
The lab of Assistant Professor Mitsuaki Kashiwagi uses mice to study the neural circuits in the brain that generate REM sleep and the mechanisms that regulate them.
Mammalian sleep consists of REM sleep and non-REM sleep, and the mechanisms and functions of REM sleep are considered to be less well understood than those of non-REM sleep.
Assistant Professor Kashiwagi and colleagues have identified a brainstem neural circuit that plays an extremely important role in inducing REM sleep, and they are advancing their research starting from this circuit.
The lab is also trying to clarify how the cerebral cortex becomes active during REM sleep, using manipulation of neural circuits and imaging.
Key terms
- REM sleep
- A sleep stage in which neurons in the cerebral cortex are activated even during sleep, producing vivid dreams.
- Non-REM sleep
- One of the two stages of mammalian sleep, alongside REM sleep. Its mechanisms and functions are gradually becoming clearer.
ResearchResearch themes
The lab uses genetic approaches in mice to study how REM sleep, which is known for producing vivid dreams, is generated and regulated. Abnormalities of REM sleep are known to be associated with neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders, so clarifying its mechanisms may also deepen understanding of the relationship between these diseases and sleep.
