Masashi Yanagisawa, Professor
0 student voices
The Yanagisawa-Funato Lab uses mice to study the mysteries of sleep, such as why sleep is necessary in the first place. The lab uses forward genetics: it examines the sleep of mice with randomly induced mutations and identifies the causative genes in pedigrees in which sleep abnormalities are inherited. So far, the lab has discovered new sleep-regulating molecules such as SIK3 and NALCN. The lab also puts effort into research that can be applied from basic science to the clinic.

Robert Greene, Professor
0 student voices
The Greene-Vogt Lab studies neural activity in the brain during slow-wave sleep, which is regarded as the deepest of the sleep stages. During slow-wave sleep, groups of neurons in the cortex show strongly synchronized on (active) and off (silent) states, producing a characteristic pattern in the EEG. Neural activity in the on state closely resembles that of wakefulness, but recent studies from this lab have revealed important differences. The lab examines cortical neurons and their networks during slow-wave sleep in detail.

Hirofumi Toda, Project Assistant Professor
0 student voices
The Toda Lab uses fruit flies to study how sleep is regulated by genes. Sleep is a behavior widely conserved among animals, but many mysteries remain about its function and mechanisms. Project Assistant Professor Toda discovered nemuri, a gene that induces sleep, and aims to elucidate how "sleepiness" is represented in the brain. The lab belongs to the International Institute for Integrative Sleep Medicine (WPI-IIIS).

Takashi Abe, Project Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Abe Lab conducts research on human sleep and sleepiness in the fields of behavioral science, psychophysiology, and neuroscience. Currently, the lab mainly works on a method for estimating reaction time as a continuous value through non-contact measurement of eyelid indices, and on EEG-based estimation of emotion in dreams during REM sleep. The lab aims to prevent accidents caused by sleepiness and to realize a safe and productive society.
