The Overseas Research Studio takes up issues of culture, society, gender, development, and policy in cities and their surrounding areas, mainly in Europe and Latin America. Through group reading of related literature, the studio aims to help students acquire multi-perspective thinking about other cultures. Beyond literature research, the studio also aims to build practical skills: conducting field research in Japan and abroad, compiling the collected data, and analyzing, examining, and communicating social issues. There is also a short visit program in which students carry out research and exchange on site.

The Social and Cultural Criticism Studio uses “criticism” as its keyword to explore a wide range of social and cultural phenomena through both theory and practice. The studio's keywords are thought, sociology, history, sound culture, and literature. Beyond literature research, students also do fieldwork on themes such as new modes of consumer society, the rise of subcultures, and cross-cultural encounters and history. Some programs involve creating works and holding workshops grounded in theoretical inquiry.

The Social Analysis Studio aims to explore the phenomena and issues inherent in society while students acquire a variety of methods of social analysis. Students learn broadly in both qualitative and quantitative research, the respective specialties of the faculty members in charge. On that basis, according to their own research interests, students aim to be able to concretely analyze issues in urban society as well as politics, gender, and the movement of people amid internationalization. Some programs involve fieldwork off campus.

The Arts and Culture Studio aims to explore the possibilities of art and culture in contemporary society and the world. Students come into contact with “other cultures,” “other societies,” and “other dimensions” found both within and outside the self, society, and the world, and connect small inquiries to collaborative practice. Beyond thinking theoretically through literature research, the studio aims to cultivate the intelligence to look closely at one's own culture and society, find meaningful questions and things, and create work. Some programs involve workshops with invited external lecturers.
