The Language Informatics Lab studies natural language processing for AI that collaborates with people to carry out complex tasks. The lab aims to have computers understand the language people use in daily life and the information surrounding it, and perform high-level knowledge processing, so that AI can work alongside people on a wide range of tasks. The lab works on technologies that understand image and speech input together with language, and on technologies that summarize and edit information according to human instructions.

The Linguistic Text Analysis Lab studies how human language ability is acquired and how it changes and varies, from the standpoint of humanities-oriented linguistics. The lab investigates these questions from both theoretical and empirical sides, using generative grammar theory, which emerged in the mid-1950s, and electronic corpora, which have become widespread since the 2000s. The lab statistically analyzes language data collected from large groups of speakers, and adopts new methods for testing whether hypotheses in theoretical linguistics are valid. The lab aims to clarify what the universality of natural language is, within the framework of generative grammar.

The Learning Psychology and Informatics Lab uses brain measurements to clarify individual differences in abilities and thinking traits. The lab measures various cognitive and psychological factors, such as language ability and well-being, and investigates the features of brain structure and functional brain networks that give rise to these individual differences. The lab aims to understand individuals' abilities and traits quantitatively and objectively, and to develop methods for enhancing them. The lab uses MRI and EEG for brain measurements, and its research is carried out by people from diverse backgrounds.

The Cognitive Psychology and Informatics Lab studies human cognitive functions such as perception, attention, memory, imagery, and Kansei (sensibility), mainly using the methods of experimental psychology. Psychological issues surrounding the use of computers are also among its research subjects. On the lab's website, it is presented as the "Cognitive Psychology and Informatics / Communication Psychology Division," which consists of two labs belonging to the Department of Human-Social Information Sciences. The lab also works with the information literacy education program of the Graduate School of Information Sciences, and information education and computer literacy are among its main research themes.

The Logical Analysis Lab is a research group that studies philosophy and logic in a broad sense. Its research keywords are dialetheism, non-classical logic, paraconsistent logic, many-valued logic, and modal logic. The lab belongs to the Department of Human-Social Information Sciences in the Graduate School of Information Sciences, and its members include faculty, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers.

The Sociology of Communication Lab takes sociology as its specialized foundation and studies social phenomena in what is called the domain of civil society. It focuses on the "patterns" of behavior found in people's everyday worlds, examining patterns of interaction, habits of daily life, and forms of voluntary associations. Using qualitative research methods such as participant observation and interviews, it approaches the logic and meaning of its subjects through both theory and fieldwork. In the lab seminar, students carefully read the works of classical sociologists such as Weber, Durkheim, and Mead, starting from the basics.

The Political Communication Lab studies causal relationships among politics, the economy, and society across the social sciences. To measure the effects of policies and social phenomena, the lab focuses on quasi-experimental causal inference using observational data. A recent focus is "historical political economy," which treats historical events as natural experiments. The lab welcomes not only students majoring in political science but also those interested in causal inference, policy evaluation, local communities, or historical context.

The Urban Socioeconomic Systems Analysis Lab centers its research on theories of how cities and industries agglomerate and take shape. Focusing on cities, regions, and international trade, the lab elucidates the structure of spatial economies and the process of their change, and conducts policy analysis for urban and regional economic development. Research is carried out with an interdisciplinary approach called "regional science," which combines multiple fields such as urban economics and game theory.

The Regional Quantitative Systems Analysis Lab, with complex networks and nonlinear science as its keywords, conducts broad research from data analysis to modeling. As mobile phones and other devices have spread, detailed data on society and the economy have become easier to obtain, and information science plays an increasingly important role in analyzing such data. According to the lab's website, people from any background are welcome, including spatial economics, regional science, spatial information science, mathematical engineering, and data science. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Fujiwara Lab."

The Spatial Planning Science Lab develops methods for analyzing data on socioeconomic activities that carry time and location information. Analyzing such spatiotemporal data may make it possible to extract information on how people actually act in a region, as well as information that can serve as a basis for discussing its future. Based on analyses of current conditions, the lab aims to create an environment where people can discuss the future of their region and to contribute to better community development. Methods for analyzing spatial heterogeneity are applied to, for example, identifying the factors behind real estate prices that differ from district to district and locating areas with frequent crime.
