The Transportation Control Lab studies how urban transportation and regional economies work, using mathematical methods and game theory. The lab consists of the Akamatsu Lab and the Satsukawa Lab. The Akamatsu Lab uses mathematical methods to study transportation demand management, explanations of how firms and populations cluster, and investment decisions on infrastructure. The Satsukawa Lab studies the analysis of traffic flows that emerge from people's adaptive behavior, and dynamic control based on evolutionary game theory.

The Media and Culture Lab studies the relationship between media, culture, and society from the perspectives of media studies and cultural studies. Through fieldwork, practice-based research, and empirical research in particular, the lab considers what participatory media and communities should look like in order to bring to light the voices of socially and discursively marginalized people and minorities. Graduate students with diverse backgrounds who are interested in media, culture, and society gather in the lab to conduct research. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Sakata Lab."

The Information Literacy Lab studies how to cultivate information literacy, which keeps changing as information and communication technology advances. The lab develops methodologies and educational content that actively use advancing information and communication technology to improve the quality of education. It also studies what future literacy regarding media and information should look like, and proposes methods for cultivating it. The research is interdisciplinary: in addition to informatics and education, it collaborates with fields such as psychology, brain science, AI (artificial intelligence), and mathematical data science.
