Together with the Department of Nephrology and Hypertension at Tohoku University Hospital, the lab provides clinical care and conducts research on kidney disease and hypertension. In clinical care, it covers acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, nephritis, and nephrotic syndrome, as well as everything from the diagnosis of urinalysis abnormalities to dialysis therapy and kidney transplantation. In research, it aims to clarify the pathophysiology of kidney and hypertensive diseases and to develop diagnostic and treatment methods. The clinical department originated from the Second Department of Internal Medicine, which once combined hematology and immunology with nephrology, hypertension, and endocrinology.

The Emergency Medicine lab carries out research in a wide range of fields to solve questions and problems that arise in clinical practice, and creates new evidence. The lab works on clinical research, basic research, database research, and the development of medical education tools. As the Advanced Emergency and Critical Care Center of Tohoku University Hospital, the lab has the mission of protecting emergency medical care in Miyagi and the Tohoku region and of contributing to the advancement of emergency medicine.

The Disaster Medical Informatics lab studies medical information systems that are useful in times of disaster. The lab builds the systems needed at each stage of a disaster, and also works on backing up medical information and making use of the data. The lab considers information technology a means rather than an end, and also values integrating it with, and improving, what is in use today, such as paper. The lab belongs to the Disaster Medical Science Division of the International Research Institute of Disaster Science.

The Biobank Life Science lab belongs to the Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization and conducts research on the construction and management of biobanks. The biobank it works with is a large-scale, population-based biobank that collects samples from the general population, linked to the Organization's community health survey (cohort study). It collects and stores biological samples such as plasma and urine from donors who have consented to participate in research, linked to anonymized health information. Because high-quality research requires high-quality samples and information, the lab studies topics such as optimizing the management of biological samples and data.

The Medical Data Science lab uses large-scale observational data to tackle a wide range of problems in medicine and healthcare. Newly established in 2026, the lab traces its origins to the chair of Hospital Administration, the first of its kind established in Japan, in fiscal 1952 (Showa 27). The data it uses include registries such as the National Clinical Database and insurance claims databases. The lab also works on the social implementation of its research results, using databases and data-driven methods.

The Occupational Medicine lab covers a broad range of areas including health promotion, workplace mental health, smoking cessation measures, and respiratory physiology, and engages in education, research, and clinical practice. Its research topics include health management, exercise habits and health, mental health care, bioscience of airway epithelial function, and pulmonary rehabilitation. As occupational physician duties, it also performs workplace inspections, assessment of health checkup results, health consultations including mental health, and support for employees returning to work from leave. In clinical practice, it is in charge of the occupational health outpatient clinic and the respiratory medicine outpatient clinic.

The AI Frontier Medical Innovation lab studies how to estimate disease risk from large-scale data on the genome and lifestyle. The lab applies statistical methods, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and theories of genetics and genomic science to medical and genomic information collected in genome cohorts, biobanks, and medical institutions in Japan and abroad. Recently, the lab has also focused on applying large language models to electronic medical records and on research into genomic language models. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Risk Statistical Analysis Room."

The Tumor Biology lab focuses its research on the function of BRCA1, the product of the gene responsible for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome. Among BRCA1's functions, the lab studies in particular its roles in centrosome regulation and in homologous recombination repair, which fixes DNA damage. The lab aims to develop cancer treatments that target the centrosome and to apply measurement of homologous recombination repair to diagnosis. The lab's PhD students belong to the Graduate School of Medicine and the Graduate School of Life Sciences.

The Modomics Medicine lab centers its research on "modomics," the comprehensive study of the chemical modifications that occur on molecules in the body. Under external stress or internal factors such as disease and aging, various molecules undergo chemical modification, gain new functions, and affect the activity of cells and organs. The lab focuses on RNA modifications in particular, studying their relationship to physiological functions such as metabolism, immunity, and aging, as well as to human diseases. The lab's website also introduces the Modomics Pharmaceutical Sciences group of the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The Division of Biochemistry studies how gene expression is regulated and how cell differentiation and cell responses are determined. Focusing on transcription factors and chromatin structure regulators, which act as gene switches, the lab investigates hematopoietic stem cell differentiation, immune cell responses, and the mechanisms of cancer development. Research combines biochemical and molecular biology techniques with mass spectrometry, next-generation sequencing, and bioinformatics. The lab provides education and research supervision in the Department of Medicine and the Department of Health Sciences at the undergraduate level, and in the Doctoral Program in Medicine and the Master's Program in Medical Science at the graduate level.
