Wakaha Ogata, Professor
0 student voices
The Ogata Lab studies cryptography for protecting communications and data. The role of cryptography now goes beyond protecting communications. It extends to proving a person's identity, proving that the content of a communication is correct, and protecting privacy. The lab works on highly functional cryptography such as attribute-based encryption and fully homomorphic encryption, as well as cryptography designed to withstand quantum computers. It also works on applications to FinTech, blockchain, and services that do not require trusting the server.

Ryutaroh Matsumoto, Professor
0 student voices
The Matsumoto Lab studies quantum information, coding theory, and information theory. On the professor's web page, a selection of past papers is published by field, including network coding, algebraic curves, quantum communication, and algebraic coding theory. The lab's recent research is introduced in a list of papers that can be reached from the lab's page. Students interested in the lab are directed to the online information session of the Department of Information and Communications Engineering and to individual lab information sessions.

Ken Kobayashi, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Kobayashi Lab studies operations research, mathematical optimization, and machine learning. These fields are closely related to one another, and the lab pursues research across them. While keeping applications to real-world problems in view, the lab also values the theoretical side of models and algorithms. Recently, the lab has been working on how to solve a class of problems called mixed-integer semidefinite optimization, and on "counterfactual explanations," which explain the predictions of machine learning.

Dai Senoo, Professor
0 student voices
The Senoo Lab studies how knowledge is created within organizations and the systems that support it. It observes processes such as how new businesses emerge, how corporate philosophies are formed, and how skills are passed on. Another focus is tools that support leaders in acting according to the situation and in bringing many perspectives into decision-making. The lab upholds three values: "give your full effort without cutting corners," "take on challenges with courage," and "respect one another."

Akiyoshi Shioura, Professor
0 student voices
The Shioura Lab conducts research on solving a wide range of management and economic problems with mathematical methods and algorithms. Professor Shioura studies discrete convex analysis, a theory of discrete optimization, and its algorithms. The lab also works on applications to other fields, such as operations research and economics. Past undergraduate and graduate research has dealt with methods for solving problems such as production planning, scheduling, delivery routing, and auctions.

福田 恵美子, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Fukuda Lab studies better social and economic systems using game theory, experimental economics, simulation, and other methods. It analyzes the behavior of individuals and consumers within a system and considers how institutions and services can be improved. Research themes include the formation and stability of patent pools, queueing games, factors that influence altruistic behavior, and search and inspection games. The subjects range from voting systems and security deployment to economic policy and service systems, and students can choose a theme that matches their interests.

Xiuzhu Gu, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Gu Lab studies how to improve the safety and quality of sociotechnical systems from the perspectives of human factors and ergonomics, resilience engineering, safety engineering, and healthcare management. Its central interest is in settings where people, technology, organizations, and environments interact in complex ways. In healthcare and other fields where safety is a priority, the lab explores why accidents and errors occur, and how people and organizations can respond more safely and resiliently. Depending on the theme, the lab combines research methods such as eye tracking, questionnaire surveys, interviews, behavioral experiments, and natural language processing.

Kyoko Nagata, Professor
0 student voices
The Nagata Lab conducts empirical research in corporate finance and accounting, focusing on problems arising in the real economy and society. It focuses on how management decisions, such as CSR (corporate social responsibility) and corporate governance, affect capital markets and firm value. Recent master's thesis topics include earnings management, outside directors and firm performance, and institutional investors and ESG. In the lab seminar, to deepen understanding of real-world issues that do not necessarily have a single right answer, students also work in teams, for example by discussing corporate governance topics.

Kotaro Inoue, Professor
0 student voices
The Inoue-Kimura Lab empirically studies corporate investment behavior, management, and governance structures from the perspective of finance (capital markets). Its research covers corporate ownership structure and governance, institutional investors' investment behavior, ESG investing, M&A, and venture capital. Its approach to supervision is to build students' ability to understand theory and analyze data while they aim for top-tier papers. The lab also carries out joint research and collaborative projects with major institutional investors, financial consulting firms, and major banks in Japan and abroad.

Yuko Kanamori, Program-Specific Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Global Environment Lab is run under a partnership agreement between Institute of Science Tokyo and the National Institute for Environmental Studies. Focusing on environmental issues, the lab builds models that incorporate people, society, and the economy, and uses them to develop future scenarios and conduct policy evaluation for a sustainable society. The faculty also includes researchers from the National Institute for Environmental Studies. Recent degree theses have addressed the transition to a decarbonized society, household electricity consumption and CO2 emissions, and the impacts of climate change.
