Takashi Nakajima, Professor
0 student voices
The Nakajima Lab studies polymer materials and nanocarbon materials, focusing on their softness. By finely controlling the hierarchy of structure and motion in materials, the lab works to greatly improve their properties and create new functions. Making use of the properties of soft matter, the lab is also developing energy harvesting devices that convert vibration and heat into electrical energy, as well as new sensor systems.
Tethuaki Itoh, Professor
0 student voices
The Itoh Lab uses experiments centered on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to study electronic phases of matter in which the spin degree of freedom plays an important role. Its subjects include strongly correlated electron systems, in which interactions between electrons are strong, frustrated magnetic systems, and systems with strong spin-orbit coupling. By experimentally observing how electron spins behave in magnets and superconductors, the lab aims for a comprehensive understanding of this field. The lab has a highly homogeneous 9 T superconducting magnet, NMR spectrometers, and equipment that re-liquefies helium, which allows experiments at low temperatures and in strong magnetic fields.
Yutaka Sumino, Professor
0 student voices
The Sumino Lab (Artificial Life Physics Lab) studies what physical laws give rise to lifelike behavior, with the goal of understanding them. The lab calls this research field Artificial Life Physics. Many phenomena seen in living systems, such as self-organization, collective motion, and pattern formation, are treated as nonequilibrium physical phenomena driven by flows of energy and matter. The lab focuses in particular on mesoscale interfaces (100 nm to 1 mm), combining the construction of model experimental systems, numerical simulation, and mathematical modeling.
Kensuke Miyajima, Professor
0 student voices
The Miyajima Lab studies the energy levels, spin states, and dynamics of electrons, holes, and excitons from the viewpoint of light–matter interaction. Using examples such as superfluorescence from semiconductor quantum dots and photoinduced magnetization in semimagnetic semiconductors, the lab takes on the challenge of creating and controlling novel optical phenomena and of exploring optical functionality such as optical nonlinearity and ultrafast response. Most of the systems used for optical experiments are built by the lab members themselves. The lab also studies the optical properties of SiC nanostructures. SiC is a material used in power devices.
Nobuaki Miyakawa, Professor
0 student voices
The Miyakawa Lab studies the growth of high-purity single crystals of strongly correlated electron materials, centered on superconducting materials, and the search for novel functional materials, including novel superconductors. The lab also puts effort into clarifying how superconductivity emerges and into discovering and explaining new physical phenomena. The lab develops and improves high-precision thermal property measurement equipment, as well as point-contact tunneling spectroscopy, and uses them to advance its research. The lab also grows large single crystals of transparent semiconductors and studies their physical properties.
Minori Goto, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Goto Lab studies spintronics, which makes use of the electron's spin. Spin is the property that gives rise to an electron's magnetism, and together with charge it is one of the two fundamental properties of electrons in matter. Devices that use spin are expected to find applications in tiny magnetic field sensors, low-power non-volatile memory, and highly sensitive communication elements. The lab aims to create new spin-based devices and technologies, and to elucidate new physical phenomena that arise in spin devices.
Kentaro Kinoshita
0 student voices
The Kinoshita Lab works on making memory devices ultra-high-performance and high-density. Memory devices store information as electronic data and process it at high speed. To support a modern society where the amount of information keeps growing, memory devices must achieve even higher performance and density. The lab takes on this challenge using knowledge of physics.
Toru Higuchi, Professor
0 student voices
The Higuchi Lab studies the development of new materials using nanostructured oxide films and their application to devices. Doping an oxide that does not conduct electricity with elements of a different valence gives rise to semiconductor-like electron behavior and ionic conductivity. In nanoionics, the field that deals with such materials, the lab's research centers on fuel cells, brain-inspired memory devices, all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries, and switching devices. For graduation research, students make oxide semiconductor thin films and device structures in the lab at the Katsushika Campus, and investigate everything from the basic properties of various conductors to their characteristics as devices.
Osamu Araki, Professor
0 student voices
The Araki Lab studies how the brain processes information. Based on the view that the dynamical systems of neural networks give rise to the brain's cognitive functions, the lab aims to elucidate the mechanisms by which those functions emerge. According to the research page on the lab website (as written around 2022), the lab approaches, through both theory and experiment, the problem of motor intention: how the brain forms plans to move and then initiates action. One of the lab's policies is to act proactively, so students choose their own research topics and write their own research proposals.
Takami Tohyama, Professor
0 student voices
The Tohyama Lab conducts theoretical research to uncover new quantum phenomena in condensed matter. The microscopic world of atoms and molecules is governed by quantum mechanics. When many molecules and atoms come together, quantum phenomena appear that are so diverse and rich that they could not be imagined from the properties of individual particles. Centered on "strongly correlated electron systems," in which the Coulomb interaction between electrons is strong, the lab carries out theoretical research on the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity, quantum magnetism, topological quantum materials, and nonequilibrium quantum phenomena. The lab combines analytical methods with computational physics methods that make full use of supercomputers.
