The Aso Lab (Earthquake Lab) works to clarify the physics of earthquakes as a natural phenomenon and to grasp their statistical characteristics. The lab is strong in data analysis, processing seismic waveforms and earthquake source information on computers. It pursues research through various approaches, both experimental and theoretical, such as observation with seismometers and earthquake simulation. The lab aims at two kinds of social contribution: a scientific one, elucidating natural phenomena, and an engineering one, predicting the future.

Saito Lab studies the electronic structure of materials that show unusual properties or properties promising for applications. Its goal is a systematic and comprehensive understanding of the electronic structure of a class of materials known as strongly correlated electron systems, with a particular focus on 3d transition metal compounds. The main experimental technique is photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy is also used. To analyze the measured data, the lab also performs theoretical calculations such as first-principles band structure calculations.
