The Forensic Medicine Lab studies medical issues related to the law, based on medicine and the natural sciences. The lab believes that forensic medicine does not deal only with death, but also protects the safety of the society in which living people live. In collaboration with the forensic medicine departments of Chiba University and International University of Health and Welfare, the lab carries out casework, research, and education across a wide range of forensic medicine through the exchange of personnel. The graduate school recruits students, not only physicians, who want to work on themes such as forensic toxicology, forensic genetics, forensic odontology, and forensic anthropology.

The Medical Informatics lab studies, from an informatics perspective, how information is handled within healthcare. The lab aims to gain new insights by analyzing the vast amounts of data accumulated in electronic health records and similar systems, and to support clinical practice itself with IT. The lab bases its research and education within the University of Tokyo Hospital. It is distinctive in operating the hospital's medical information system while using real data and systems as its research setting. At the graduate level, the lab is in charge of education for the Department of Social Medicine, the Department of Public Health, and the Department of Health Sciences and Nursing.

The Waki DTx Lab studies digital health that uses information devices such as smartphones and wearables, together with apps. The lab develops apps for lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes, confirms their effects through clinical trials and clinical studies, and works to turn them into tools that are used in society. Recently, the lab has been focusing on developing apps with stronger features that bring about behavior change and encourage improvements in lifestyle. By working with the Faculty of Medicine, hospitals, and local clinics, the lab aims to carry out research and development that meets the needs of clinical practice.

The lab studies the ethical and philosophical theories that form the foundation for healthcare policy decisions and for ethical judgments in clinical practice. In a field where medicine, philosophy, law, sociology, psychology, and religious studies overlap, the lab conducts empirical research in Japan and abroad alongside literature-based research. In 2019, the lab established the University of Tokyo Bioethics Collaborative Research Organization, through which it works with faculty members from departments across the university on bioethical issues in contemporary society. In its classes, the lab emphasizes not only understanding the issues but also acquiring ways of thinking ethically, and it puts strong effort into group discussions and exercises.

The lab studies how social structures and relationships between people affect health-related behaviors and health itself. The lab combines theories and methods from behavioral science, psychology, sociology, economics, and epidemiology. The lab focuses in particular on eliminating the health disparities caused by social inequalities, and is committed to communicating evidence-based findings. Its interests range from the everyday level, such as communication between patients and healthcare providers, to the societal level, such as health and medical policy.

The Department of Health Communication studies communication in the health and medical field. Using empirical research, the lab addresses topics such as how health and medical information is conveyed to society and how patients and healthcare providers communicate with each other. At its research meetings, the lab discusses graduate students' research and reads English-language books and papers on health communication together. Education is centered on the graduate school. Students can enter the programs in Public Health, Social Medicine, or Health Sciences and Nursing and conduct research in the lab.

The Clinical Epidemiology and Economics Lab studies clinical epidemiology and health economics. Clinical epidemiology applies epidemiological methods to problems that arise in clinical practice, and it provides the foundation for practicing evidence-based medicine (EBM). In health economics, the lab considers how healthcare resources should best be allocated across society. Drawing on analytical methods from two different backgrounds, epidemiology and economics, the lab conducts research and education based on empirical data.

The Social and Preventive Epidemiology Lab focuses on nutritional epidemiology. Nutritional epidemiology is a field that uses epidemiological methods to clarify the relationship between what and how people eat and their health. The lab studies how to assess diet itself, and uses those methods to investigate the relationships between dietary habits and a range of health problems. The lab was established when the Department of Public Health (School of Public Health) was founded, and Prof. Murakami was appointed Professor in August 2023.

The Biostatistics Lab studies statistical methodology for medical research. Biostatistics is a field that provides methods for how to collect data (study design) and how to analyze it (statistical analysis) in medical research. The lab also conducts research and education in epidemiology, which examines health- and disease-related events in populations in order to support prevention. At the undergraduate level, the lab is in charge of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and students writing graduation theses also belong to it.
