Jun Matsushima, Professor
Energy & Batteries1 student voices
The Matsushima Lab studies geophysical exploration, which investigates conditions underground, and energy resources. Drawing on seismic surveys, laboratory experiments, and theory, the lab works on methods for evaluating resources such as methane hydrate. The lab also studies the “quality” of energy by comparing the energy used to extract a resource with the energy obtained from it. Its research also covers muography, geothermal resources, and geological storage of carbon dioxide.

Kazuo Hiekata, Professor
AI & Machine Learning1 student voices
The lab studies society and business as systems made up of people, technology, and institutions. It supports decision-making through modeling, simulation, data analysis, and team workshops. Its research topics include the decarbonization of shipping, the automation of ships and vehicles, and transportation services in depopulated areas. The lab also studies teamwork and consensus building, which are needed to put good solutions into practice in society.

Akihiro Nakao, Professor
Communications & Networks1 student voices
Nakao Lab studies next-generation communication infrastructure (cyber infrastructure) to support the society of the future. The lab combines multiple technologies, including computer networks, operating systems, and network security. In recent years, the lab has focused on Beyond 5G, the generation following 5G, and on technologies that implement the functions of communication equipment in software. The lab also conducts research that uses local 5G and IoT to solve regional challenges and promote regional industry.

Gjergj Dodbiba, Associate Professor
Environment & Sustainability1 student voices
The Dodbiba Lab (Materials Processing Engineering Lab) studies technologies for resource recovery, recycling, waste treatment, and environmental remediation. Depletion of natural resources and environmental problems are difficult to address with existing technologies alone, and new technologies for sustainable materials processing are needed. Using experiments and computer simulations, the lab searches for environmentally friendly chemical and physical processing methods, and also synthesizes new functional materials. The environmental impact of recycling and wastewater treatment methods is evaluated using LCA.

Kazuyuki Demachi, Project Professor
Energy & Batteries1 student voices
The Demachi Lab studies countermeasure technologies that use deep learning (AI) for nuclear security, nuclear safety, and nuclear maintenance at nuclear power plants. The lab works on technologies that use AI to detect equipment failures and abnormal human behavior, as well as AI that selects information useful for work tasks. The lab also conducts research on medical imaging, using deep learning to render images of tumors.

Takeshi Tsuji, Professor
Environment & Sustainability1 student voices
The Tsuji Lab studies seismic exploration techniques that image the subsurface structure of the Earth, the Moon, and Mars, as well as monitoring techniques that capture movement underground. Knowing the state of the subsurface is critically important for CO2 reduction and energy development, such as geological CO2 storage and geothermal energy. To support disaster prevention, the lab also develops monitoring technology to predict earthquakes and volcanic activity in the Japanese archipelago. The lab also develops instruments for space exploration and analyzes data obtained in space.

Kenji Tanaka, Professor
Economics & Social Systems1 student voices
Tanaka Lab conducts research to solve challenges in a variety of industries, including electric power, logistics, and retail. The lab works on blockchain-based systems for power distribution and settlement, as well as methods for managing logistics and electric power based on supply forecasts. The lab also has research that uses power supply data to avoid failed deliveries when recipients are not at home. The lab is also advancing joint research with companies.

Chiharu Tokoro, Professor
Environment & Sustainability1 student voices
The Tokoro-Takaya Lab researches mineral processing, resource recycling, and environmental remediation technologies. Its goal is to create a truly sustainable, resource-circulating society. The lab works on recycling lithium-ion batteries and solar panels, and on separating iron ore for hydrogen-based ironmaking. Its research themes also include fixing CO2 using waste ore and treating wastewater containing toxic elements.

Takashi Takata, Professor
Energy & Batteries1 student voices
The Takata-Narukawa Lab studies the risks hidden in large engineering systems such as nuclear power plants. Its starting point is the idea that no engineering system is absolutely safe. Because many events can occur and the uncertainty is large, the lab develops assessment methods by combining basic experiments with numerical simulation. It also studies how to use the risk information obtained from these assessments in decision-making.

Ryuichi Shibasaki, Associate Professor
Economics & Social Systems1 student voices
The Shibasaki Lab studies the systems of cross-border logistics and transport between countries. After understanding the actual state of logistics in each country and region, the lab builds models that provide a global overview of logistics. Using these models, the lab evaluates international policies and specific projects, with the goal of supporting policymaking and investment decisions. The lab also conducts analyses using big data, such as AIS data that records ship positions, and machine learning.
