Kenichi Tonokura, Professor
Environment & Sustainability1 student voices
The Tonokura Lab studies phenomena caused by chemical substances in the atmosphere and their effects on the environment. Drawing on methods from physical chemistry and spectroscopy, the lab investigates atmospheric components and how they change. In particular, to understand the mechanisms by which substances harmful to human health transform in the atmosphere, the lab develops measurement instruments and analyzes chemical reactions.

Yoshiko Tsuji, Professor
Materials & Nanotech1 student voices
Tsuji Lab studies eco-friendly functional thin-film materials that use resources effectively, with the aim of building a sustainable society. For thin-film materials used in displays and solar cells, the lab clarifies the relationships among fabrication methods, structure, and function, and develops materials based on designs set in advance. The lab is researching how to make organic and inorganic thin films through low-cost coating and drying processes. Lab visits are accepted at any time.

Kaori Sugihara, Associate Professor
Bio & Life Sciences1 student voices
The Sugihara Lab studies "biophysical engineering," which applies knowledge of biophysics and physical chemistry to engineering. Through the development of new antibacterial drugs and biosensors, the lab aims to bring new technologies to drug development and disease diagnosis. Its work includes antimicrobial peptides that tackle drug-resistant bacteria, which are not killed by existing drugs, and materials that make force visible as color. The lab is located in the Institute of Industrial Science, and most of its members are people who moved from other universities at the master's or PhD stage.

Yasunori Kikuchi, Professor
Economics & Social Systems1 student voices
The Kikuchi Lab studies the environment and sustainability, building on systems thinking and systems engineering. Its research targets include energy, resource circulation, materials, and industrial systems. By combining technology assessment methods such as life cycle assessment (LCA) with systems design approaches, the lab supports analysis and decision-making that look ahead to future society. The lab has no experimental facilities. Instead, it emphasizes analytical thinking skills, such as mathematical modeling, data analysis, and the design of evaluation indicators.

Masaru Ogura, Professor
Chemistry & Catalysis1 student voices
The Ogura Lab studies the synthesis of porous materials, including zeolites, and ways of using them that take advantage of their characteristics. Its goal is materials that are truly usable and can help solve environmental, resource, and energy problems. The lab works on catalysts that clean automobile exhaust and on materials that adsorb and collect substances present at low concentrations. The lab is located in the Institute of Industrial Science, and it recruits and accepts graduate students.

Kensuke Fukushi, Professor
Environment & Sustainability1 student voices
The Urban Sustainability Lab studies the sustainability of cities, building on environmental engineering. Its research targets range from global problems to individual decision-making, and it always keeps people's daily lives in mind. Each student chooses one topic through discussion with the faculty, on subjects such as energy, food, infectious disease risk, and climate change adaptation.

Fumiyuki Nakajima, Professor
Environment & Sustainability1 student voices
The Environmental Quality Risk Management Lab studies the risks that arise when human activities degrade the quality of water, air, and soil. The lab investigates the forms in which hazardous substances from cities exist and how they affect living organisms (ecotoxicity). It also develops sewage treatment technologies that use the action of microorganisms. The lab values how members working on very different subjects come together as one group, gaining broad knowledge and perspective.

Kumiko Oguma, Professor
Civil Engineering, Architecture & Urban1 student voices
The Urban Water Systems Lab conducts field surveys of water environments, develops water treatment technologies, and studies how water supply should be designed. Water has value in both quality and quantity, and it is essential for healthy lives and sound social activity. The lab aims to maximize that value in a sustainable way. The lab works on elucidating the mechanisms of water pollution, developing new drinking water treatment technologies, and proposing appropriate water quality indicators.

Kiyoshi Takami, Associate Professor
Civil Engineering, Architecture & Urban1 student voices
The Urban Transportation Lab studies transportation in cities and its planning. It explores forms of cities and transportation that better support lives in which people live, work, and relax, with an emphasis on contributing to their realization. The lab develops survey and analysis methods for understanding human activities and behavior more deeply, and works on value-creating approaches to transportation and community planning. Its themes also include land use and transportation strategies and planning systems for sustainable cities, as well as the potential of new mobility.

Fumihiko Seta, Associate Professor
Civil Engineering, Architecture & Urban1 student voices
The International Urban and Regional Planning Lab conducts comprehensive, empirical research on matters related to cities. The lab examines planning systems and planning issues by working with actual cases and data. Its research also covers urbanization in large cities in Asia and other developing countries, as well as environmental issues such as reducing energy consumption. The lab also considers what kinds of planning are needed when populations decline and cities shrink.
