Tamio Ikehashi, Professor
0 student voices
The Ikehashi Lab studies applying tiny mechanical components called MEMS to sensors and other devices. MEMS are systems built with microfabrication technology that combine electronics and mechanical engineering. Some MEMS products, such as accelerometers and pressure sensors, are already used in everyday life. Looking ahead to the IoT era, in which large numbers of small, low-cost sensors are used, the lab works on everything from creating new sensors to integrating them with circuits.
Takeshi Ikenaga, Professor
0 student voices
The Ikenaga Lab studies information systems that handle images and video. It envisions a society where people can use information anytime, anywhere, with security and comfort, and aims to build the video information systems that are key to that society. Video compression and video filtering and recognition are its two main pillars. The lab does not stop at devising algorithms; it carries them through to real-time embedded systems and LSIs.
Takaaki Kakitsuka, Professor
0 student voices
Kakitsuka Lab studies semiconductor lasers and their applications to information and communications. Photonics has supported the information society through a wide range of information and communication systems, including optical communications, sensors, and measurement. Today, expectations are growing for reducing the power consumption of data communications and for building high-performance computers with optical neural networks that use light. With optical circuit design as its core technology, the lab proposes light-emitting systems made of optical components such as semiconductor lasers, together with information processing circuits.
Shinji Kimura, Professor
0 student voices
Kimura Lab studies the design of system LSIs and the verification that checks their correctness. Verification is the work of showing that what you have designed is truly correct. Making an LSI takes a large cost and a long time, so its correctness must be shown at the design stage. The lab works on both building circuits that are fast, small in area, and low in power consumption, and automatically showing that their designs contain no errors.
Shoji Makino, Professor
0 student voices
Makino Lab studies acoustic signal processing. People take in voices, music, and the sounds of a crowd with two ears and interpret them with the brain. The lab's question is how to achieve this mechanism on a computer. Using both signal processing and deep learning, the lab works on extracting a target sound from a mixture of sounds.
Kiyoto Takahata, Professor
0 student voices
The Takahata Lab studies optoelectronic integration technology that combines LSI (large-scale integrated circuits) and optical devices. As smartphones and video services have spread, the amount of information flowing through the internet has been growing rapidly in recent years. Meeting this demand makes higher speed, larger capacity, and lower power consumption in communication networks key challenges. The lab builds compact optical transceivers for high-speed optical communication systems, and optical-microwave integrated devices aimed at use in mobile networks.
Toru Tanzawa, Professor
0 student voices
The Tanzawa Lab studies design techniques for making integrated circuits greener. Shipments of integrated circuits, such as those for IoT devices, LSIs for AI, and driver ICs for power semiconductors, keep growing every year. As a result, the total power consumption of integrated circuits keeps rising as well, making it important to reduce power at the circuit and system levels. The lab researches and develops technologies to make digital, analog, memory, and power-supply circuit systems greener.
Shintaro Yamasaki, Professor
0 student voices
The Yamasaki Lab conducts fundamental research on optimal design and applied research on its use in integrated systems and related fields. Optimal design is the approach of mathematically defining design variables, an objective function, and constraints, and deriving the optimal design solution. When design freedom is small, human intuition and experience can solve the problem, but as freedom grows, reaching the optimal solution becomes extremely difficult. With "optimal design" as the keyword, the lab works on a wide range of targets, from integrated devices to automobiles.
Toshihiko Yoshimasu, Professor
0 student voices
The Yoshimasu Lab studies high-frequency integrated circuits for wireless communication. Wireless devices such as mobile phones, car navigation systems, and satellite broadcasting receivers have become essential to daily life and work. The lab covers a wide range, from the architecture of the radio section to the modeling of high-frequency transistors. Students work through the whole process: designing with circuit simulators, fabricating prototype chips, and measuring their performance.
Kazunori Serita, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Serita Lab studies sensing and system development using terahertz waves. Terahertz waves are electromagnetic waves located exactly between radio waves and visible light. Like radio waves, they pass through many kinds of materials, and like light, they can be focused with lenses, so they make it possible to examine the inside of an object without damaging it. The lab develops highly sensitive, compact systems and sensors using extremely small point light sources, which are created by converting the wavelength of light into terahertz waves.
