Yuya Morimoto, Professor
0 student voices
The Morimoto Lab centers on microfabrication and microfluidic device technologies and conducts research integrated with biotechnology and medical technology. The lab aims to create systems that combine devices with cells, enzymes, and proteins. In particular, it focuses on establishing methods for building tissue by culturing cells outside the body, and on realizing biomachines that integrate cultured tissue with devices. The lab seeks to establish tissue construction methods that anyone can use with any type of cell, and to lead to the industrialization of cultured tissue.
Yasuhiro Oikawa, Professor
0 student voices
The Oikawa Lab studies sound, an essential means of communication for people, broadly from basic to applied research. Sound travels through air as a longitudinal wave, through alternating compression and rarefaction of the air. The lab observes how acoustic communication is conveyed in three domains: sound generation, propagation through space, and perception by the ear. Students pursue themes that match their own interests, such as visualization and measurement of sound, the physics and mathematics of musical instruments, and analysis of acoustic signals.
Takashi Kawai, Professor
0 student voices
Kawai Lab studies cutting-edge technologies from the perspective of ergonomics. The lab seeks to understand how people interact with other elements of a system and to find ways to improve safety and comfort. Its targets are technologies expected to become widespread in the near future, such as stereoscopic (3D) video, virtual reality, and mixed reality.
Yukio Gunji, Professor
0 student voices
Gunji Lab studies "expression" that emerges through the behavior of living things. The lab introduces slight environmental changes to creatures such as ants, crabs, and hermit crabs, drawing out unexpected behavior that does not normally appear. Through these experiments, models, and theory, the lab considers what life is.
Hirokazu Koreeda, Professor
0 student voices
The Koreeda-Tsuchida Lab is a lab where students make films through hands-on practicum work. In the "Film Production Practicum," students spend a full year making a film in teams, working together from planning through to screening. Some of the finished films have been screened in movie theaters and at international film festivals. The lab studies not only the making of films, but also how they are watched and screened.
Tomoko Hashida, Professor
0 student voices
The Hashida Lab begins its research by carefully observing everyday objects that we think we know well. By adding just a little control to artifacts and natural objects, the lab draws out behaviors never seen before and possibilities that had been hidden. Through this research and the creation of works, the lab aims to shake preconceptions about the objects it studies.
Katsumi Watanabe, Professor
0 student voices
The Watanabe Lab takes the human mind as its subject of study. Using cutting-edge methods from cognitive science, psychology, and neuroscience, the lab aims to scientifically uncover the conscious and unconscious processes that create the mind. Through careful experiments, the lab shows that the world people believe to be certain is actually quite precarious. The lab also investigates why people are nevertheless able to lead stable everyday lives.
James Jack, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Jack Lab works on contingent environmental art expression based on contemporary art and design. Using ecological thinking, collaboration, and an archipelagic approach, the lab focuses on the connections between humans and ecologies. The lab conducts creation and research across national borders, aiming for art that weaves stories of the resilience of more-than-human beings. The lab places stories, the sea, and the land at the center of its contemporary art practice.
Yota Morimoto, Associate Professor
0 student voices
At the Morimoto Lab, students learn to investigate scientifically why humans make music and why music moves them emotionally. Music is an accumulation of human auditory perception and practical know-how, and understanding how it has changed and evolved requires a multifaceted approach. In addition to the methods of modern science such as acoustics and psychoacoustics, the lab also studies musical instruments and compositional methods. By listening closely, working with their hands, and making sound, students think about the future of music and sound culture.
Tsukasa Fukusato, Lecturer
0 student voices
The Fukusato Lab studies computer graphics and human-computer interaction. Creating 3DCG works and hand-drawn works requires designers' manual work, which takes a great deal of time and effort. The lab therefore works on formalizing the experiential skills that designers have and turning them into systems that can be used. It also focuses on building creative support systems that can easily reflect the user's direction.
