An applied mathematics lab that reads the motion of thin liquid films through equations.

The Bowen Lab studies the motion of thin liquid films (thin films) using mathematical equations. The lab treats phenomena such as thin film rupture and moving boundaries (free boundary problems) as higher-order partial differential equations, and investigates the properties of their solutions. The lab carries out its analysis by combining perturbation methods, bifurcation theory, and ideas from dynamical systems with numerical computation. These equations and the methods used to solve them can also be applied to a wide range of problems beyond thin films.

The Ohnita Lab studies differential geometry, which uses differentiation and integration to investigate the properties of curved spaces and shapes. The core of its research is the theory of harmonic maps, which are maps between spaces whose energy is in balance. The lab belongs to the Global Center for Science and Engineering and teaches geometry in degree programs taught in English.

A lab that uses probability theory to study the properties of matrices and shapes generated by chance.

The Chin Lab studies probability theory and its applications. In particular, the lab works on random matrix theory, which investigates the properties of matrices whose entries are determined randomly, and random topology, which investigates the properties of randomly constructed shapes. In the lab seminar, members also deal with the structure of random graphs and with point processes, in which points are scattered at random.
