The Protein Crystallography Lab is a structural biology lab that seeks to understand biological functions based on three-dimensional structure. While valuing the tradition of protein crystallography, the lab also uses NMR and cryo-electron microscopy as complementary methods. The Protein Organic Chemistry Lab develops methods for building proteins by chemically linking amino acids, and studies the function of the proteins it makes from the viewpoint of organic chemistry. With the common method of making proteins by introducing a gene into E. coli, it is not possible to make proteins carrying phosphate groups or glycans, or proteins that are toxic to E. coli. The lab aims to establish a method that can synthesize any protein, including those embedded in cell membranes and poorly soluble in water, and those carrying modifications. Taking advantage of the strengths of chemical synthesis to approach protein function, the lab also hopes to advance the design of new proteins and the development of new drugs.

The Molecular Creation Lab studies molecules involved in cell signal transduction (extracellular ligands and their receptors) to clarify what is working and how it works. Broadly, the lab belongs to structural biology, and it studies a wide range of phenomena, from neuroscience and development to immunology, without limiting itself to specific molecules or phenomena. Using three-dimensional structures, the lab also modifies and improves natural proteins, and conducts research that leads to the development of artificial proteins (biopharmaceuticals) useful for preventing and treating disease. The lab places importance on producing high-quality recombinant proteins as research materials, using animal cell expression systems and its own purification techniques.

The Spin Structural Biology Lab develops methods to analyze the dynamic structures of proteins, using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and its own stable isotope labeling. The lab aims to clarify the relationship between the structure and motion of proteins and their biological functions. The lab is located in the Institute for Protein Research at Osaka University, and can accept graduate students from the Graduate School of Frontier Biosciences, and from the Departments of Biological Sciences and Chemistry in the Graduate School of Science. The Functional Structure Measurement Lab uses solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to investigate, at atomic resolution, the three-dimensional structures, chemical structures, and dynamics of insoluble and non-crystalline materials and molecular assemblies. The lab also builds instruments and methods for spin hyperpolarization (DNP), making it possible to observe extremely small amounts of molecules that were previously invisible because of limited sensitivity. It has also developed nanodiamond polarizing agents that do not lose activity inside cells, as well as a nano-space selection method that picks out and observes only the target molecules, enabling highly sensitive observation of targets even in crowded environments. These technologies are widely applied in research in biology, chemistry, and materials science.

The Supramolecular Structure Analysis Lab investigates the three-dimensional structures of biological supramolecular complexes, which are formed when biomolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids assemble. With the aim of understanding life phenomena at the atomic level, the lab determines three-dimensional structures by X-ray crystallography and also develops methods for doing so.
