The Intelligent Information Systems Lab (Hara Lab) conducts research on building advanced multimedia information systems by integrating database technology with multimedia information processing, computer networking, and virtual reality technologies. Many of the research themes explore the potential for creating new businesses, and they are carried out as joint projects with various companies and other organizations. The lab actively creates opportunities to present its research results at academic conferences in Japan and abroad. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Hara Lab (formerly Nishio Lab)."

The Big Data Engineering Lab researches cutting-edge elemental technologies in fields such as big data, natural language processing, data mining, and artificial intelligence. While collaborating with researchers active around the world, the lab applies its technologies to big data held by companies, aiming to create new value. Research themes include deep learning on graph data, databases, and large language models. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Onizuka Lab."

The Real-World Intelligence Foundation Lab studies artificial intelligence that estimates the behavior, state, and context of humans and animals from multiple types of sensor data. Spanning IoT, wearables, biologging, activity recognition, localization, edge AI, and Physical AI, the lab designs sensors, data, algorithms, and implementation as one integrated whole. The lab aims to establish an intelligence foundation that works in real-world environments. On the lab's website, it is also introduced under the name “Maekawa Lab.”

The Data Generation Engineering Lab develops real-scale social simulation (RSSS) technology, which reproduces a virtual real-world society that includes human elements. On a digital twin of real society built in cyberspace, the lab simulates individual decision-making, such as movement and purchasing behavior. On the lab's website, under the name “RSSS Laboratory,” it is introduced as working on developing the elemental technologies needed to safely realize real-world-scale simulation. The lab advances research on data generation in the fields of social simulation and drug discovery.

The Advanced High-Performance Computing Infrastructure Systems Lab (Date Lab) conducts research and development on computing infrastructure, including supercomputers. Computing infrastructure is the foundation for large-scale computation such as AI development and numerical simulation. The lab studies how to build computing infrastructure, how to draw out the maximum performance of the infrastructure from applications, and how to bridge the infrastructure and applications. The lab is housed at the D3 Center of Osaka University and is a cooperating lab of the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology and the School of Engineering.

The Multimedia Agent Lab studies agents that interact with people through various senses such as sight, hearing, and touch, and support them both informationally and physically. Such agents are called multimedia agents. The lab carries out broad research and development on the core technologies of robots and avatars, on technologies for interaction with people, and on advanced applications in the real world. In the Department of Multimedia Engineering, Graduate School of Information Science, the lab is introduced as a collaborative chair with the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR).

The Metabolic Informatics Engineering Lab studies methods for improving cells into an optimal state for the production of substances by microorganisms. Focusing on metabolic flux, the flow of cellular metabolism, the lab aims to design metabolic pathways that can produce target substances at high yield. The lab combines computational metabolic design with metabolic flux analysis using stable isotope 13C-labeled compounds. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Shimizu Lab."

The Bio-Information Measurement Lab aims to clarify why biological metabolism works so well and to apply that understanding to biotechnology and information technology. Metabolism is the process by which cells break down sugars and other nutrients to extract the energy they need to live, and produce the materials for building new cells. The lab develops technologies for measuring metabolism and for analyzing measurement data, and uses them in research on topics such as cancer metabolism and the metabolism of budding yeast.

The Human Information Engineering Lab studies technology that reproduces and conveys what a person in a distant place sees, hears, and touches, as well as their body posture. The lab treats humans as an informational black box with sensation as input and movement as output, analyzes the mechanisms of sensation and movement, and develops systems that use those mechanisms. The lab develops devices for transmitting and sharing sensations and for transferring skills, and conducts psychophysical experiments that investigate human perception. The lab's website introduces it under the name "Maeda Lab."
