The Neural Systems Lab uses calcium signaling characteristic of neurons as a clue to study the mechanisms by which the brain forms and changes, as well as the causes and pathology of psychiatric and neurological disorders that arise when these mechanisms break down. The lab conducts basic research mainly on mice as model animals, using methods such as molecular and cell biology, calcium imaging including in vivo imaging, histology, behavioral analysis, and circuit manipulation. Its research targets range from cultured neurons to phenomena in the brain. The lab's website introduces it under the name "Takemoto-Kimura Lab."

The Molecular Metabolic Medicine Lab studies the mechanisms of chronic inflammation involved in lifestyle-related diseases such as obesity and diabetes. Focusing on immunometabolism, the interface between nutrition/metabolism and inflammation/immunity, the lab positions itself as a bridge between basic and clinical research and aims to conduct research that leads to clinical applications. The lab interacts with researchers from diverse backgrounds both inside and outside the lab, and also engages in medical-engineering collaboration with researchers from other fields. The lab also serves as a cooperating department (Immunometabolism) of the Graduate School of Medicine, Nagoya University.

The Systems Neuropharmacology Lab conducts research aimed at elucidating the complex neural mechanisms that govern emotional behavior and contributing to progress in psychiatric disorder research, which has reached an impasse. The lab studies brain function by combining cutting-edge technologies such as whole-brain imaging, calcium imaging, and optogenetic and chemogenetic methods. The lab places importance on respecting the autonomy of students and young researchers, so that they can enjoy their research. On the lab's website, it is presented under the name "Kasai Lab."

The Pathological Neuroscience Lab aims to clarify the pathology of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which damages motor neurons, and Alzheimer's disease, a leading cause of dementia, and to develop new treatments. The lab creates and analyzes model mice and cultured cells carrying disease-related genes, and applies the results to understanding the mechanisms of sporadic, non-hereditary forms of these diseases. It has shown that abnormalities in the glial cells surrounding neurons accelerate the progression of neurodegeneration in ALS. The lab is recruiting graduate students (master's and doctoral programs), and undergraduate students and research students can also take part in its research.
