The Molecular Genetics Lab studies the mechanisms of DNA repair and the diseases that result from the accumulation of DNA damage. Cells repair damaged DNA to keep the genome stable, and when this function breaks down, it is involved in disease states such as cancer and aging. Using next-generation genome analysis technologies, the lab aims to detect DNA damage, identify the causes of diseases, and develop diagnostic and therapeutic methods. The lab welcomes young people who aspire to become researchers, as well as physicians.

The Data-Driven Biology Lab aims to clarify the "logic by which living systems give rise to their functions" through mathematical approaches. Spanning levels from molecules to cells to multicellular systems, the lab uses mathematical modeling to explore how biological functions that appear purposeful are realized. The lab's web page lists keywords such as Bayesian inference, reinforcement learning, and single-cell omics. The lab says that undergraduate students who are motivated to try research are welcome to get in touch, regardless of their affiliation.

The Department of Laboratory Animal Science conducts research using mice, aiming to contribute to understanding complex higher-order biological phenomena in humans. Most human diseases arise from the complex interplay of many genes and environmental factors. In humans, it is difficult to examine individual factors in detail, but in mice, genetic and environmental factors can be tightly controlled and analyzed. The lab's research challenges are developing and breeding disease models of glucose and lipid metabolism disorders and parasitic infections.

The Health and Nutrition Medicine Lab belongs to the Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine and is presented as part of the Department of Health and Social Medicine in the doctoral program. The lab is in charge of cystic fibrosis in the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare's Research Group on Intractable Pancreatic Diseases. The faculty members are staff of the Research Center of Health, Physical Fitness and Sports at Nagoya University.

The Health and Sports Medicine Lab studies the mechanisms by which insulin resistance develops, as well as countermeasures against it. Insulin resistance is a major pathological condition underlying lifestyle-related diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, and is also thought to be a cause of aging. The lab focuses in particular on preventive interventions through exercise and nutrition therapy, and conducts studies in humans, animal experiments, and molecular biological investigations. In recent years, the lab has also begun studying how the brain (the central nervous system) regulates glucose and energy metabolism.

The Psychopathology and Psychotherapy Lab studies mental disorders with psychopathology and psychotherapy as its core. Drawing on their own clinical experience, the faculty members work on topics such as psychoanalytic thinking, hikikomori (severe social withdrawal), and children's mental health. Because this is not a lab that conducts experimental biological research, the faculty members, graduate students, and research students are all expected to find their own research areas and subjects from their clinical experience and practice. The lab is one of the cooperating chairs in the Basic Medicine field of the Graduate School of Medicine, and its faculty members also work in the Health Administration Office of the Research Center of Health, Physical Fitness and Sports, providing mental health care for the university's staff and students.

The Health and Exercise Science Lab studies the mechanisms that regulate blood pressure and blood flow during exercise, using human participants. Prof. Katayama studies why blood pressure rises more in older adults than in young people even during light exercise, focusing on the muscle pump. Prof. Ishida studies how the strength and speed of thigh muscle contractions change blood flow in the femoral vein through the muscle pump. Prof. Katayama and Prof. Ishida belong to the Research Center of Health, Physical Fitness and Sports.

The Hematology and Oncology Lab studies blood diseases, from elucidating their pathophysiology to developing new diagnostic and treatment methods. It works on a broad range of themes, including hematologic malignancies, molecular targeted therapy, immunotherapy and cell therapy, and thrombosis and hemostasis disorders, with the ultimate goal of bringing all of it back to the bedside. Based on the belief that the truth lies in specimens obtained from patients, the lab aims to train Physician-Scientists who combine clinical practice and research. The lab recruits doctoral and master's students regardless of their university of origin or experience, and lab visits are welcome at any time.

The Cardiovascular Medicine Lab, a division of internal medicine that diagnoses and treats diseases of the heart and blood vessels, is engaged in clinical care, research, and education. In addition to clinically oriented research, it studies basic research on angiogenesis and vascular regenerative therapy, diabetic cardiomyopathy, and the molecular pathology and treatment of chronic heart failure. Clinical care is divided into teams and groups such as ischemic heart disease, structural heart disease, heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, and arrhythmia.

The lab provides clinical care and conducts research on a wide range of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract from the esophagus to the anus, as well as the liver, biliary tract, and pancreas. In addition to diagnostic and therapeutic techniques using endoscopy and ultrasound, the lab works on cancer treatment and on the diagnosis and treatment of immune-related diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease. Research is divided into the gastrointestinal, biliary-pancreatic, and liver groups, and also includes cross-organ research that extends beyond the digestive system, such as studies of the gut microbiota. In the professor's greeting, teamwork in clinical care and research with other departments, basic science faculty, nurses, pharmacists, and technicians is described as important.
