The Biological Function Science Lab is part of the Department of Integrated Health Sciences at Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine, and was established with the 2020 academic year reorganization. The clinical group conducts prospective cohort studies of sarcopenia in cancer patients, as well as clinical research on motor function and gait analysis in children and older adults. The basic research group conducts basic research on the molecular mechanisms of skeletal muscle atrophy caused by various factors, including cancer cachexia, and on the mechanisms of muscle regeneration after muscle injury. In addition to collaborations between the two groups, the lab also conducts research in cooperation with labs in rehabilitation and information science (the information on the lab's website dates from around 2020).

The Host Defense Information Science Lab studies the immune mechanisms that protect the body and the cell-protective effects of flavonoids, which are natural compounds. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Kawabe Lab." Associate Professor Matsushima studied the mechanisms by which flavonoids protect cells. Professor Kawabe is working to elucidate how flavonoids enhance innate immunity and help prevent pneumonia. Professor Kawabe also studied the relationship between the immune response and the function of macrophages in engulfing and processing dead cells. Professor Sato is working on research into genes that could serve as new therapeutic targets for lung cancer.

The Cellular Genetics and Information Science Lab studies, at the molecular level, how hematologic malignancies such as acute leukemia arise. Focusing mainly on acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the lab searches for genetic abnormalities in patient samples collected through nationwide collaborative studies. The lab investigates why the genetic abnormalities it finds cause leukemia, using experiments such as introducing genes into cells. The lab also searches among existing drugs for ones with antitumor activity that have been overlooked until now.

The Ikeda Lab conducts AI-based research on cytology, a clinical test that is widely performed. The lab trains deep learning models on cultured cells and attempts to detect and recognize them. In addition to AI research, the lab also studies cell morphology and develops new immunocytochemical methods. On the lab's website, it is presented under the name "Ikeda Lab."

The Biomolecular Information Science Lab conducts research on extracting and measuring trace components from biological samples such as urine and blood. The lab applies this analytical technology to environmental epidemiology and develops methods to determine "exposure levels" to chemical substances. The lab develops methods for the targeted, highly sensitive measurement of small molecules in biological samples, and applies them to clinical specimens and epidemiological surveys to clarify disease mechanisms and assess exposure to chemical substances. The separation analysis performed in the lab is also used in clinical laboratory education at the undergraduate level.

The Real-World Information, Health and Medicine Lab uses large-scale medical and health data, such as genome information, insurance claims, and electronic medical records, to search for risk factors that lead to disease onset and progression to severe illness. By combining data science, biostatistics, and epidemiology, the lab is also developing algorithms that predict onset and progression to severe illness. Based on these results, the lab aims to advance medicine and health sciences by proposing optimal prevention and intervention measures. Through its research, the lab also works to train data scientists in medicine and health who can handle big data.

The Life and Human Information, Health and Medicine Lab combines computational biology and digital health technologies to pioneer data-driven health science. In the human body, molecular activity (micro) and body movement (macro) influence each other. The lab aims to use AI to integrate data from both layers and build precise digital twins for medicine. In computational biology, it uses omics analysis covering genomes, proteins, glycans, and more. In digital health, it uses sensing with 3D cameras and wearable devices. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Matsui Lab."

The Advanced Measurement Information, Health and Medicine Lab studies brain imaging data, with the human brain as its main research subject. Because the brain is extremely complex, the causes of neurological and psychiatric diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and depression are still largely unknown. Using large volumes of brain imaging data from the Brain & Mind Research Center at Nagoya University, the lab tries to capture the structure and function of the brain and the changes that accompany disease. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "TBIS (Translational Biomedical Intelligent Systems)."

The Center for Brain and Mind Research pursues broad interdisciplinary research, including elucidating the pathology and treatment of brain and mind disorders, brain development and aging, and the role of brain function in education. Training the next generation of researchers and healthcare professionals is also one of its goals. Built on large-scale cohorts of development, disease, and aging, the center is forming a regionally connected research consortium that collaborates with departments of the Graduate School of Medicine, other graduate schools and institutes, and outside hospitals, universities, and companies. The content of this page is based on the website of the center as a whole.

The Computational Biology Lab, part of the mathematical analysis division of the Institute for Glyco-core Research, studies methods for mathematically analyzing large-scale data in life science. Advances in next-generation sequencing, mass spectrometry, imaging, and sensing technologies are producing large amounts of diverse data. Associate Professor Matsui's mission is to use such data to develop methods for revealing the mechanisms of previously unknown living systems. The Institute for Glyco-core Research is an international institute that aims to understand the essence (core) of life by studying glycans, and brings together researchers from Gifu University and Nagoya University.
