The Communications and AI Signal Processing Lab studies ultrahigh-speed wireless communications and the AI and signal processing that support them. Communications is a field that underpins society, as seen in fifth-generation mobile communication systems (5G), which began in 2020. To realize high-performance, highly functional communication systems, the lab takes a multifaceted approach: developing optimization and simulation tools, new communication methods, and new signal processing functions.

The Systems Mathematics Lab studies the modeling, analysis, design, and optimization of large-scale, complex systems. It deals with the mathematical methods and algorithms that make this possible, from both theoretical and applied perspectives. Its subjects include engineering applications of biological systems, the design of VLSI and FPGAs, and behavior control of swarms of intelligent robots. The lab also works on developing and analyzing optimization methods that use nonlinear dynamical systems such as chaos.

The Mobility Design Lab studies the design of transportation equipment and moving equipment. It views a product as a “living ecosystem” that interacts with its users and environment. Mobile machines such as cars, ships, and aircraft, and dynamic machines such as robots and industrial machinery, are treated together as a single system. Based on this knowledge, the lab makes proposals in the form of concrete design concepts and three-dimensional design works.

The System Planning Lab regards a variety of design subjects as systems and designs their mechanisms. Its aim is to make people's lives richer and more convenient. It covers a wide range of areas, from tangible things to intangible experiences, without being bound by traditional design fields.

The Materials Planning Lab studies, from the perspective of design science, the relationship between the inherent properties of materials and the attributes that arise from them. Within the connections among objects, people, and the environment, the lab aims to create new value. Its work includes examining how to select and use materials, developing functions and applications that make use of new technologies, and analyzing the form and structure of designs from both formative and mechanical perspectives. The lab also uses Kansei engineering to identify the factors that create a sense of material quality and applies the findings to product development, and it addresses issues of resource and environmental conservation.

The Communication Design Lab studies design that gives messages carried by media an effective and appealing form, and establishes a dialogue between those messages and people. Its subjects are public information such as news reporting and guidance, corporate design such as advertising and public relations, and interface design. For each of these, the lab studies expression techniques, planning methods, and evaluation methods. Associate Professor Jang, who leads the lab, works on communication design that connects people, including branding, sign design, and character illustration.

The Human Information Science Lab conducts research to realize human interfaces that better fit human characteristics. Today's society involves many kinds of communication, including interaction between people through artifacts and interaction between people and artifacts. Based on the view that a better relationship between people and technology is needed to make these interactions smoother, the lab studies problems involving human information processing from various perspectives, such as biological science and digital technology, and proposes solutions.

The Psychology and Behavioral Science Lab studies human psychology and behavior using the methods of psychology. In addition to experimental psychology, which deals with sensation and perception, cognition, emotion and affect, and learning, the lab also covers social psychology, which deals with interpersonal perception and interpersonal communication. The lab believes that one task of a designer is to uncover users' latent needs and give them form.

The Commercial Design Lab studies how products exist in the setting of consumption, drawing on the ideas of merchandise science. What consumers seek is not simply a commodity. The lab takes the view that consumers choose what suits them from among many similar products based on the context attached to each product. Its research themes are how products communicate and how context is created.

The Environmental Design Lab comprehensively investigates problems involving the environment and people, focusing on understanding the characteristics of human psychology and behavior, and studies desirable environments and planning methods. The lab's subjects are wide-ranging: acoustic, visual, and lighting planning; spatial staging; furniture and interior planning; public signage planning; and interior and exterior environmental planning. It always starts from a comprehensive perspective. The lab surveys on site, forms hypotheses, proposes designs, and then verifies them in the actual location. Using joint research with companies and ties with local communities as a framework, the lab provides a place where students can design while experiencing the reality of the field.
