The Nano-Organized Materials Chemistry Lab conducts research on creating materials with high chemical functionality, based on materials chemistry. The lab synthesizes materials and examines the structure and properties of the resulting materials in detail. It combines this with atomistic simulation, which allows the relationship between properties and crystal structure to be reasoned about rationally, and focuses mainly on materials used in fuel cells. The lab is part of the Hokkaido University–NIMS Joint Graduate School Program, and accepts doctoral students who conduct their research at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS).

The Ubiquitous Networks Lab researches and teaches the next generation of networks, aiming at a society where information networks reach every corner. It approaches networks from two perspectives, the information and communication infrastructure and the information services that run on it, and offers a system for studying everything from infrastructure to applications comprehensively. The lab is a collaborative division with two research laboratories of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT), and researchers from NTT Access Network Service Systems Laboratories and NTT Communication Science Laboratories serve as Visiting Professors. NTT Access Network Service Systems Laboratories researches and develops technologies for access networks, which connect users to NTT buildings, including optical and wireless communications and facility operation. NTT Communication Science Laboratories conducts research from both information science and human science, aiming at a new technological foundation that connects information and people.

The Media Network Society Lab deals with the principles of the mobile communication networks that support the use of smartphones and similar devices, as well as trends in cutting-edge research and development. The lab also conducts comprehensive research on how information and communication relate to social life and economic activity. It provides hands-on training in statistical science, which also underlies machine learning and artificial intelligence. The lab is a collaborative division with NTT DOCOMO, INC., and researchers from NTT DOCOMO serve as Visiting Professors.

The Remote Sensing Informatics Lab studies system technologies for observing the Earth in detail over wide areas. Based on the large volumes of data sent back by Earth observation satellites, the lab conducts research and development on building and operating systems that monitor the Earth's environment. The lab is a cooperative program with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), in which JAXA researchers serve as visiting faculty at Hokkaido University and supervise graduate students. Research takes place in Building L of the Faculty of Engineering on the Sapporo Campus, and in autumn the lab offers the graduate course "Advanced Remote Sensing Informatics" as an intensive course.

The Digital Human Informatics Lab studies technologies for checking, at the design stage, whether products and everyday environments fit the human body. The lab measures the shape and movement of the body, analyzes them with statistics and mechanics, and reproduces individual differences in shape and movement on a computer. It conducts research and development on technologies that compute the interaction between the body and products or environments to evaluate them virtually on a computer, and it also carries out joint research with manufacturers. The lab is a cooperative program with the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), in which AIST researchers serve as visiting faculty.
