The Gnathology and Occlusion Lab studies functional disorders of the masticatory muscles and temporomandibular joint, and how to treat them. The lab works to clarify how the masticatory muscles, the temporomandibular joint, and the bite (occlusion) relate to one another. Faculty members also see patients at the specialist temporomandibular disorder outpatient clinic in the Temporomandibular Joint Treatment Unit at Hokkaido University Hospital.

The Oral and Maxillofacial Reconstruction Lab studies techniques for diagnosing and treating congenital oral conditions such as cleft lip and cleft palate. Cleft lip and cleft palate are the most common congenital malformations that appear on the surface of the body. The impairment is not limited to the shape of the face; it affects every function of the mouth, including breathing, swallowing, chewing, and speaking. In addition to developing treatment techniques, the lab conducts clinical and basic research aimed at future prevention.

Hiroyuki Takashima, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Takashima's lab conducts research using imaging equipment used in everyday clinical care, such as plain X-ray, CT, and MRI. Guided by the idea that "Good research starts with good questions," the lab logically investigates what is needed to obtain images that are useful for diagnosis. Combining this with image analysis, the lab also pursues basic research on bone and muscle metabolism, aging, and inflammation, and puts emphasis on translational research that returns the results to clinical practice.

Yusuke Matsuya, Lecturer
0 student voices
The lab of Lecturer Yusuke Matsuya studies the effects of radiation on living organisms using computer simulations and theoretical models. The lab develops and applies PHITS (Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System), a code that calculates the transport of radiation. The lab builds models that predict the whole sequence from radiation exposure to DNA damage and later responses such as chromosomal aberrations, with the aim of applying them to radiation protection and therapy. The results of this research are incorporated into PHITS and provided to PHITS users around the world.

The Biological and Organic Geochemistry Lab conducts research aimed at clarifying the evolution and changes of the Earth's biosphere over geological timescales. Focusing mainly on strata (sediments) and fossils, the lab combines organic chemical analysis with geoscience field surveys. From these, the lab reconstructs past global environments and ecosystems, and seeks to clarify long-term environmental change and material cycling systems. The lab welcomes students who are strong in chemistry or geology and are interested in the history of life on Earth and in environmental and climate change.

Masashi Ikeda, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
The Ikeda Lab studies past organisms and environments using molecular fossils (biomarkers) and organic-walled microfossils preserved in sediments. Focusing mainly on land-dwelling organisms, the lab works on reconstructing past ecosystems, changes in past environments, and the history of life on Earth. Using materials such as Cretaceous sedimentary rocks distributed in Hokkaido, the lab carries out field surveys and laboratory analyses.

Tsuyoshi Watanabe, Lecturer

The Coral Reef Global Environmental Science Lab studies variability in tropical and subtropical climate and marine environments, using coral reefs as its main field site. Its main clues are calcium carbonate produced by living organisms (biogenic carbonates), such as coral skeletons and shells. Analyzing chemical composition along the growth bands recorded in a skeleton makes it possible to estimate the environment at the time the skeleton formed. The lab also examines how organisms such as corals and bivalves have responded and adapted to environmental change.

Takeshi Horinochi, Professor
0 student voices
The Horinochi Lab studies atmospheric phenomena across a range of time scales and how they relate to climate. Through numerical simulation and analysis of observational data, it seeks reliable knowledge about weather and climate. Its subjects range widely, from typhoons and East Asian precipitation to the atmosphere of Venus. Graduate education is provided across the whole Atmospheric and Oceanic Physics and Climate Dynamics course.

Masatomo Fujiwara, Professor
0 student voices
Prof. Fujiwara specializes in atmospheric science and studies how substances are transported through the atmosphere and climate change caused by volcanic eruptions. Prof. Fujiwara has also worked on developing and evaluating observation instruments carried on rubber balloons, such as water vapor sondes and cloud particle sondes. Internationally, the lab is deeply involved in activities to evaluate climate data and in research on observation networks for climate change. Since 2022, the lab has also begun routine ozone layer observations in Sapporo.

Hiroyuki Tomita, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Tomita Lab studies air–sea interaction, in which the atmosphere and the ocean meet at the sea surface and influence each other. The heat, momentum, water, and other quantities exchanged between the atmosphere and the ocean are called sea surface fluxes, and quantifying them is the core of the lab's research. The lab mainly uses techniques that estimate sea surface fluxes on a global scale based on satellite observations. Established in FY2021, the lab carries out research spanning meteorology, oceanography, and climatology.
