The Comparative Pathology Lab studies what causes animal diseases and how they develop. The lab diagnoses diseases of various animals, including dogs, cats, chickens, cattle, and horses, by gross and microscopic examination, and applies the results to subsequent treatment and prevention. In addition, the lab conducts experimental pathology research that clarifies the causes and mechanisms of disease through experiments. The name of the lab reflects the belief of Dr. Koichi Ichikawa, who established it, that 'veterinary pathology is a field that also contributes to basic medicine.'

The Theriogenology Lab investigates the causes of infertility and its treatment in cattle, especially dairy cows, in order to improve their productivity. Focusing on the function of the vagina and uterus among the causes of infertility, the lab conducts research using live cows and cultured cells. For the conservation of wildlife, the lab also studies reproductive physiology and assisted reproductive technologies in a variety of animals, building on the knowledge and techniques developed with livestock. Besides research, the lab is in charge of reproductive management of the dairy cows at the affiliated farm (such as artificial insemination and assistance with calving) and provides consultation on the breeding of zoo animals.

The Animal Molecular Medicine Lab studies parasitic diseases, genetic diseases, and blood diseases in dogs and cats. Through both clinical care at the affiliated Animal Medical Center and research in the lab, the lab aims to contribute to veterinary medicine. The lab works on how protozoa that infect canine red blood cells become resistant to drugs, diseases caused by congenital genetic abnormalities, and the treatment of diseases in which the immune system destroys blood cells.

The Advanced Veterinary Medicine Lab is a clinically focused lab made up of faculty who handle clinical care and surgery at the affiliated Animal Medical Center. With the goal of advancing veterinary medicine, the lab engages in daily clinical care, education, and research. Many faculty members affiliated with the hospital supervise research, covering a wide range of small animal clinical topics, including anesthesia and diagnostic imaging in addition to surgery and internal medicine.

The Microbiology Lab conducts research to protect animals and people from the threat of infectious diseases. To clarify how viruses cause disease, the lab examines differences between viruses that cause disease and those that do not, and studies the factors that determine pathogenicity. The lab also investigates host factors involved in disease onset, based on differences in how cells and animals respond to viral infection.

The lab studies how viral and bacterial infectious diseases in animals cause illness, with the aim of bringing them under control. When a pathogen enters the body, animals fight back with their immune systems, but pathogens have many ways to evade immunity or disrupt it. To protect against pathogens, the lab investigates the relationship between pathogens and hosts from both sides: the survival strategies of pathogens and the immune mechanisms of the host.

The lab studies parasites that live on or in animals. In parasitism, where one organism relies on another for shelter and nutrition, a relationship of contest arises between the parasite and its host. By studying this complex and diverse relationship, the lab seeks answers to a central question in veterinary medicine: how best to deal with parasitic infections.

The lab studies viral zoonoses, which are infectious diseases transmitted between animals and humans. Changes to the global environment caused by human economic activity have greatly increased contact between people and wild animals carrying pathogens, as well as the mosquitoes and ticks that transmit them. This is thought to be the cause of outbreaks of these infections. From field surveys in Hokkaido that collect rodents and ticks to cell analysis using electron microscopes, the lab broadly investigates how viruses are transmitted and how disease develops.

The Veterinary Hygiene Lab studies infectious diseases that spread between humans and animals, as well as foodborne infections. The lab began as a department devoted to prion disease research, prompted by the occurrence of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in Japan. Today, in addition to prion diseases, its research covers drug-resistant bacteria and foodborne infectious diseases. Its work ranges from basic research on disease mechanisms to epidemiological surveys of pathogens and the development of diagnostics and treatments, driven by curiosity: asking "why," and finding things "mysterious" and "interesting."
