The Behavior Measurement Engineering Lab is a field-centered lab that contributes to the fishing industry by measuring the behavior and condition of fish. The lab films fish at sea and at aquaculture sites, and uses cameras, AI (image recognition), and stereo vision to measure the movement of fish schools and the size of individual fish without touching them. Based on the data obtained, the lab aims to improve the design of fishing gear and the management of aquaculture. The lab also does biology research that uses image processing, such as examining from images the body shape features that indicate a fish's age and the development of its eggs.

Shintaro Gomi, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
Assistant Professor Shintaro Gomi's lab works on developing technology for the effective use of fishery resources. Its research focuses on estimating the state of fishing gear and controlling it. By scientifically analyzing the characteristics of fishing gear and the mechanisms of fishing, and by devising new methods and technologies, the lab aims for a sustainable fishing industry.

Takafumi Sasaki, Professor
0 student voices
The Sasaki Lab studies the relationship between the fisheries industry and society from the perspectives of fisheries economics and vocational education. It clarifies the actual working conditions of people in the fisheries industry and considers better labor environments so that the industry can become sustainable. It also investigates how fishing vessels operate in the waters around Japan, and considers sustainable fisheries production in seas where nations compete with one another. Its research spans eras, from the history of modern fisheries education to today's fisheries supported by foreign crew members.

The Ecosystem Change Analysis Lab conducts research that makes changing marine ecosystems visible using a variety of methods. Using biologging, biotelemetry, and acoustic measurement instruments, it develops methods for monitoring marine biological resources. It is an independent research field without its own facilities, and effectively uses a satellite office of the Hakodate City International Fisheries and Marine Research Center as its research base. It has field sites across Japan and sometimes overseas, and conducts joint research with a variety of organizations.

Yasuaki Takagi, Professor
0 student voices
Takagi Lab researches how to make effective use of the collagen contained in fish bodies. When fish are processed, parts such as the head, bones, and skin are discarded (by-products). The lab aims to extract useful components from these parts and develop new products, so that fish are used without waste. The lab also studies the farming of sturgeon, whose roe is harvested as caviar.

Shigeho Ijiri, Professor
0 student voices
Ijiri Lab studies how germ cells, the precursors of eggs and sperm, develop in fish. The lab aims to uncover these mechanisms and create technologies that control sex differentiation and sexual maturation in fish. Using mainly sturgeons, Japanese eel, and masu salmon, the lab focuses on gonadal endocrinology. Members get a firsthand sense of the challenges at aquaculture sites, then carry out basic and applied research in the lab to solve them.

Kazuhiro Ura, Professor
0 student voices
Ura Lab (Marine Animal Physiology Lab) studies osmoregulation in fish and how invertebrates adapt to their environment. The lab learns from living organisms how they adapt to, and coexist with, environments that change from moment to moment. In its lab introduction, students present the sea urchin aquaculture demonstration trial being run at the Faculty of Fisheries Sciences, through a video they made.

Takashi Todo, Professor

Under the keyword “the science of fish eggs,” the Marine Animal Reproductive Biochemistry Lab studies how fish eggs are formed (oogenesis). Building on this basic research, the lab develops seed production techniques for producing juvenile fish for aquaculture, and runs breeding trials using advanced technologies. The lab is also developing efficient methods for surveying fish resources and biotechnologies that use fish. Its goal is to clarify the reproductive mechanisms of each species, bring them under human control, and connect this to industries such as aquaculture.

ichiro Higuchi, Project Assistant Professor
0 student voices
Project Assistant Professor ichiro Higuchi studies how the gonads of sea urchins grow larger, as well as sea urchin aquaculture. Sea urchins are a high-end food, but they are also a problem because they eat seaweed down to nothing and cause isoyake (the loss of seaweed beds). Urchins in isoyake-affected seas are skinny and have no commercial value. To put them to use through aquaculture, the lab is carrying out research toward developing formulated feed for sea urchins. The lab works on both molecular biology research in the laboratory and aquaculture demonstration trials in the field.

Hiroyuki Mizuta, Professor
0 student voices
Professor Hiroyuki Mizuta’s lab studies how seaweeds such as kelp live and increase in an ever-changing environment. Seaweeds form seaweed beds along the coast, where they serve as habitat and food for marine life and help purify the water. The lab focuses on the maturation of the kelp that people farm and harvest, and studies the conditions and mechanisms that lead to maturation, as well as techniques for controlling it by human hands. Other research topics include the techniques that underlie seaweed reproduction and breeding, the mechanisms by which seaweed protects itself from stress, and nutritional physiology.
