The Quantum Energy Conversion Materials Lab researches the creation of new materials using quantum beams such as ions, electrons, and light, as well as plasma. The lab works on developing new energy materials that withstand extremely harsh conditions, as well as functional materials such as all-solid-state battery materials and hydrogen storage alloys. Using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the lab examines the fine structure of materials and clarifies how their properties emerge. International students and postdocs from China, Malaysia, and other countries join the research, which is carried out with green technology in mind.

The Light and Heat Energy Conversion Materials Lab creates new materials for light energy conversion and thermoelectric energy conversion. Drawing on the diverse properties of matter from a materials science perspective, the lab aims for materials that are highly efficient and place a low burden on the environment. The main targets are photoelectric conversion in solar cells and light-emitting devices, optical device materials with photocatalytic properties, and oxide thermoelectric materials with unusual electron and heat transport. The research aims to produce materials with new functions that arise from nanostructures.

The lab is searching for materials and processes that can store and transport energy at high density and convert it efficiently. Its main themes include next-generation thermal energy storage materials for solar heat and industrial waste heat, an energy-saving process for producing oxygen, and a new ironmaking method that uses ammonia as a fuel. The lab is also researching how to produce fine ceramics, such as nitrides and oxynitrides, in a short time by combustion synthesis. Using exergy theory, the lab also works on designing systems in which the total sum of losses is minimized.

The Center for Advanced Nuclear Safety Research and Education is a hub for advanced research and development on nuclear safety and for training the people who will take it on. It was established in October 2021 within the Faculty of Engineering. Together with the institutions participating in the project, the center creates and shares online teaching materials, and offers opportunities to take part in the experiments and practical training that each institution does best. Faculty members from labs in the Faculty of Engineering, such as the Nuclear Environmental Materials Lab and the Neutron Beam Applied Engineering Lab, also join the center's members.

The Disaster Preparedness Behavior Lab studies how climate change alters the way rain falls, and how to evaluate water disaster risks across entire river basins. It also studies risk assessment that gives companies and other organizations a reason to take active steps toward disaster preparedness. The lab also works on methods to encourage residents to evacuate. It is an endowed research division in the Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering.

The International Infrastructure Management Lab works to build a hub for an international network related to the management of civil infrastructure. In Thailand and other countries, it carries out joint research and social implementation activities with Japanese companies, local universities, and local infrastructure managers. Through collaboration with international organizations such as JICA and through research projects, it is advancing the deployment of technology in countries across Asia. It is an endowed research division in the Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering.

The Circular Innovation Lab aims to build a sustainable society through decarbonization and a circular economy, both approached with natural capital at the center. Companies, government, universities, citizens, financial institutions, and students work together to develop technologies and social systems in which materials and energy circulate. The lab works on developing technologies for use in society, running demonstration tests, and conducting feasibility studies. It is an endowed research field established in April 2025 in the Environmental Engineering Division of the Faculty of Engineering, funded by a donation from a company.

The Resource and Environmental Remediation Lab studies methods for restoring the environment at former mine sites. It also studies ways of developing mines so that less environmental action is needed after they are suspended or closed. For mine drainage from suspended and abandoned mines, the lab works on environmental measures that combine treatment with countermeasures at the source. It is an endowed research field in the Environmental Circulation Systems Division of the Faculty of Engineering.

The Global Development Informatics Lab studies digital transformation (DX) efforts to carry out large-scale civil engineering works, such as pipe jacking, by remote operation or automation. It also conducts research on waste incineration and recycling. It also conducts research on making effective use of biomass. It is an endowed research field in the Environmental Circulation Systems Division of the Faculty of Engineering.
