AboutAbout the lab
For the long-term sustainability of nuclear energy
The Nuclear Power Support Social Infrastructure Technology Lab is an endowed research division in the Department of Applied Quantum Science, Faculty of Engineering.
Its research fields are research and technology development to promote decommissioning through international cooperation and to develop future reactors, as well as research and technology development for the long-term sustainability of nuclear power generation, including new reactors.
The lab also works on improving safety by advancing dynamic PRA and reactor physics simulation, and on risk assessment of nuclear systems, targeting light-water reactors, nuclear fuel cycle facilities, and new reactors.
Key terms
- Decommissioning
- Dismantling a reactor that has ended operation and removing radioactive materials to bring the site to a safe state
- Dynamic PRA
- A method that follows the progression of an accident over time to estimate the probability and consequences of possible events (PRA: Probabilistic Risk Assessment)
- Nuclear fuel cycle
- The process of extracting uranium and plutonium from spent fuel and using them again as fuel
ResearchResearch themes
The lab conducts research that supports the use of nuclear energy through research and technology development on decommissioning and new reactors, safety improvement, and risk assessment of nuclear systems.
