The Uehiro Hokkaido Regional Co-creation Lab conducts fieldwork in communities across Hokkaido and carries out regional projects in practice. Building on that practice, the lab trains young people to become the next generation of regional leaders, and also pursues research that turns its training methods into explicit knowledge. Its goals are a sustainable, coexisting regional society and a Hokkaido free of the “hometown divide.” It is an endowed research unit established in the Uehiro Hokkaido Regional Co-creation Division of the Faculty of Engineering.

The Intelligent Software Lab studies how artificial intelligence technology can be used in society. The lab has two pillars. One is multi-agent social simulation, which examines behavior in settings where multiple people or robots are present. The other is natural language processing built around large language models, aiming for processing that goes into causal relationships and specialized knowledge. With these two as twin pillars, the lab also pursues questions such as what intelligence is and what society is.

The Autonomous Systems Engineering Lab studies artificial life and artificial intelligence under the theme of "understanding and creating life-like intelligence." Using neural networks such as deep learning as tools, the lab applies them in a wide range of areas. These include AI programs for board games and curling, reproducing the process by which people experience optical illusions, AI that supports sign language learning, and research on monitoring the behavior of zoo animals. Under the motto "give everything to both research and play," the lab values building an environment where members can commit themselves without fear of failure.

The Harmonious Systems Engineering Lab aims to contribute to people's happiness and social harmony by applying artificial intelligence technology. Its fields are broad, including deep learning, machine learning, genetic algorithms, game theory, and multi-agent systems. The lab implements these as smartphone, cloud, and web services, and carries its research through to having people in the real world use them. As an extension of this, venture companies have emerged from its research results, and joint research with companies is progressing.

The Human-Computer Interaction Lab studies the design of interaction between people and computers. Its work includes research on conversational robots, xR research covering VR, AR, and MR, and the development of user interfaces that apply artificial intelligence. The lab's scope is broad, extending to user experience design and interaction design, both essential to building products. Students can set their own research topics with freedom, or work on themes the lab has been pursuing.

The Large-Scale Knowledge Processing Lab studies foundational technologies for handling large-scale data at extremely high speed, based on cutting-edge algorithm theory. At the base of information science lies mathematical theory, and above it lie practical techniques for solving individual problems. The lab's goal is to build a general-purpose technological foundation that connects these two layers. For this reason, the lab values not only conceptual and theoretical results but also implementing algorithms that hold up in practical use. While pursuing fundamental principles, the lab also sharpens its members' craft as engineers, aiming to solve real-world problems with solid grounding.

The Knowledge Base Lab studies methods for finding useful knowledge and information in vast amounts of data. It also aims to combine the extracted information with existing knowledge, organize and systematize it, and turn it into knowledge that can be used again and again. The lab approaches this process of discovering, organizing, and reusing knowledge from the viewpoint of information similarity and abstraction, and studies it through both theory and experiments. It also works on ways to link the results of machine learning, such as deep learning, with existing knowledge, and to solve problems in collaboration with people.

The Information Knowledge Network Lab studies algorithms and artificial intelligence, with knowledge discovery and information retrieval as its themes. Based on algorithms, the lab tackles head-on the ultra-fast processing of large-scale, unstructured spatiotemporal data from the real world. Its core is basic research on discrete algorithms, and it also covers applications to artificial intelligence and big data. The lab suits people who enjoy thinking about mathematics and how systems work, and people who like writing programs are also welcome.

The Algorithms Lab studies algorithms in machine learning and data mining from both theoretical and applied perspectives. On the theory side, it covers online learning, in which the next action is decided while receiving the results of past actions, and active learning, which reaches an answer with few queries. On the applied side, it works on learning from information obtained on the Web, learners that run on limited hardware, and applications to biology and medicine. The lab aims to formulate real-world problems and build algorithms with performance guarantees.

The Mathematical Informatics Lab uses mathematics as a tool to study a variety of phenomena from an information perspective. It treats image and audio or acoustic signals as functions and analyzes them using Hilbert space theory and operator theory. It also studies fuzzy theory and many-valued logic, which bring the subjective vagueness that people have into information processing. There is also research that expresses biological phenomena with mathematical models and analyzes them, so the range of subjects is broad.
