The lab provides surgery and multidisciplinary cancer treatment for diseases of the liver, biliary tract, and pancreas. The lab performs minimally invasive treatment such as laparoscopic surgery and robot-assisted surgery, and in liver transplantation it carries out many transplants for end-stage liver disease and liver cancer. With a view to returning results to the clinic, the lab conducts wide-ranging research on hepato-pancreato-biliary cancer and on regenerative and transplant medicine, and aims to train surgeons who can understand cutting-edge basic research. The lab hosts an endowed department, the Department of Gastrointestinal Oncology Control and Organ Regeneration Surgery.

The lab conducts research to optimize and make less invasive the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, to develop new diagnostic and treatment methods, and to build systems for personalized treatment. Among Japanese women, breast cancer is most common in their 40s and after menopause. Responding to breast cancer that develops at a young age, and optimizing treatment for breast cancer that develops in older age, are also challenges. So that women with breast cancer can remain active in their roles in society and at home and plan a fulfilling life, the lab researches integrated care from diagnosis through treatment, in collaboration with other specialties.

As a discipline of systemic patient management, anesthesiology aims to protect patients from the physiological insult (the burden placed on the body) caused by surgery, infection, trauma, and the like. Clinical activities fall broadly into three areas: anesthesia for surgery, intensive care, and pain treatment. The lab's greatest goal is to clarify how the body responds to insult and to develop systemic management and treatments that suppress excessive responses.

The lab consists of four fields (perinatal medicine, gynecologic oncology, reproductive medicine, and women's health medicine) and addresses issues across women's entire life cycle, from adolescence to menopause. Perinatal medicine supports the health of mother and child during pregnancy; gynecologic oncology deals with benign and malignant tumors in women; and reproductive medicine deals with infertility and reproductive endocrinology. Women's health medicine is taught as primary care covering all diseases related to the physical and mental characteristics specific to women.

The lab puts great effort into developing new medical care for malignant tumors such as prostate cancer, kidney cancer, urothelial carcinoma, and testicular cancer, as well as for kidney transplantation and minimally invasive treatment. The clinical and research divisions are located close together and work in collaboration, balancing translational research that responds to clinical needs with basic research that probes the fundamentals of life science. While enrolled, graduate students have almost no hospital duties, and an environment has been set up where they can concentrate on research.

The lab provides surgical treatment for the full range of cardiovascular diseases in adults and children: congenital, aortic, ischemic, valvular, and arrhythmia. It also actively takes on difficult operations such as thoracoabdominal aortic replacement, as well as the latest treatments such as stent grafts and catheter-based aortic valve treatment. Through joint research with the university's iPS cell research institute and outside research institutions, the lab also focuses on exploratory medicine, which applies research results in the clinic.

The lab was founded in 1941 and has led the field of thoracic surgery in Japan. For lung cancer, which is on the rise, it performs minimally invasive surgery using thoracoscopes and robots. The lab has performed more lung transplants than any other in Japan, and also supports facilities that are starting lung transplantation. It trains doctors who are skilled not only in surgical technique but also in examinations and supportive therapies around surgery, and who can handle everything from diagnosis to treatment.

The lab treats congenital conditions and reconstructs tissue lost to disease or injury, providing treatments that restore appearance and heal wounds cleanly. To improve appearance, the lab also restores the underlying structures that cannot be seen from the outside, and reconstructs function as well. It uses cutting-edge techniques, from difficult operations such as microsurgery to laser treatment and cell-based regenerative medicine. The lab values research that is close to clinical practice. It develops new materials jointly with basic research labs and companies, with the goal of bringing them to actual clinical settings.

The lab researches the mechanisms of the various diseases that affect the eyeball, an organ with a complex and delicate structure, and develops treatments for them. Aiming for a true integration of insights from clinical practice with high-quality research, the lab takes both research and clinical care seriously. The lab holds that anyone who wants to think about eye diseases a little more deeply is fully qualified to join.

The lab treats a wide range of diseases of the head and neck as a whole. Its main research focuses on senses such as hearing, balance, smell, and taste, and on functions such as breathing, swallowing, and vocalization. Through regeneration of inner ear sensory cells and the eardrum using regenerative medicine, and through the development of systems that deliver drugs to the inner ear, the lab aims to create new treatments for inner ear hearing loss. The lab is also advancing airway regeneration using artificial tracheas and iPS cells, research on tissue stem cells of the larynx, and the development of robots to support precise surgery. This lab has an endowed chair, the Department of Advanced Therapeutics for Head and Neck Tumors.
