Palliative care nursing is a field that develops nursing care to prevent and relieve physical, psychological, social, and spiritual suffering, and to support living to the very end, for people of all ages who have experienced cancer or other life-threatening illnesses, and for their families. Achieving a life lived with cancer is an important issue for society. The lab aims to contribute to maintaining and improving quality of life by developing nursing that prevents and relieves the holistic suffering of cancer survivors and implementing it in society.

Perinatal epidemiology works to elucidate the causes of, and develop support methods for, physical and mental health problems of parents and infants in the perinatal period and of women across their lifespan. The graduate school offers a course focused on training midwives, the "Advanced Practice Midwifery" track, and a course focused on training researchers. In the Advanced Practice Midwifery track, students earn the credits required to be eligible for the national midwife examination and acquire skills such as assisting deliveries and ultrasound diagnosis.

Community Health Creation Nursing teaches and researches public health nurse activities at every level of prevention, based on the principles of public health, to realize the health and well-being of people in the community. The lab looks not only at people who need support but also at health issues that are latent or anticipated in the community. Undergraduate students also carry out graduation research, with graduation theses on topics such as university students' well-being, sleep, and fathers' involvement in childcare.

The Innovative Rehabilitation Science Lab aims to develop rehabilitation technologies that meet the needs of the times. Applying the PDCA cycle of repeated “assessment” and “intervention” to research as well, the lab tackles a wide range of problems, from molecules and cells to organs, individuals, and society, from both basic and clinical perspectives. Students learn the whole process, from organizing the problem to verifying the results, step by step across the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs.

The Biophysical Rehabilitation Lab aims to establish “regenerative rehabilitation,” which combines physical therapy and regenerative medicine. The lab explores the mechanisms by which physical agent therapy and exercise therapy promote tissue regeneration in the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. It conducts basic and applied research using cell culture and laboratory animals, which is unusual in the field of physical therapy. The lab also accepts people without a rehabilitation background and teaches them from the basics.

The Clinical Biomechanics Lab measures and analyzes the movements of young adults, older adults, patients, and athletes using motion capture systems, force plates, electromyography, ultrasound diagnostic equipment, and more. By analyzing the mechanical properties of the forces acting on muscles and joints, as well as the relationship between muscle properties or motor function and movement ability, the lab aims to develop effective treatments and preventive methods. The lab hopes to train physical therapists who have both the clinical ability to treat patients and the research ability to examine the effects of that treatment.

The Biological Function Lab studies the mechanisms of exocytosis at synapses, the junctions that connect neurons. Synaptic exocytosis is the smallest (about 40 nm in diameter) and fastest (within 1 ms) form of exocytosis in the body. The lab aims to uncover how this tiny event varies depending on the brain region and the situation, and how those variations give rise to differences in the properties of neural circuits.

In rehabilitation and occupational therapy for people with impaired physical function, it is important to look at the central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord. The Clinical Cognitive Neuroscience Lab non-invasively evaluates the excitability of the central nervous system during movement and occupational activities, and works to develop treatment programs based on scientific evidence. The lab actively pursues translational research that brings the results of basic research into clinical treatment. Undergraduate students also belong to the lab as graduation research students.

The Developmental Psychiatry Lab studies neurodevelopmental disorders, mainly autism spectrum disorder, from the perspectives of child and adolescent psychiatry and cognitive neuroscience. Clarifying the characteristic psychophysiology and cognitive processing of these disorders provides a foundation for building accurate understanding and sound support. The graduate program includes students from healthcare professions as well as students with backgrounds in psychology, music therapy, and other fields, and undergraduates also encounter a variety of research methodologies while working on their graduation theses.

The lab explores ways to improve mental function impairments such as schizophrenia and depression, as well as delirium and cognitive impairment that accompany physical illness. It also develops support methods that promote independent living and social adaptation for the people it serves, as well as methods that help improve the abilities of healthy people. The lab conducts research that supports simple assessment and intervention applicable to occupational therapy and psychiatric rehabilitation.
